Dr. Seuss, Ad Man

09 Jan 2003 by Scott Upton

I never knew this, but Theodore Geisel supported himself during the Great Depression as an advertising illustrator. UC San Diego has placed many of these illustrations on-line to encourage greater access. His style and wit — even then — is all his own.

Some of my favorites: Flit, Wild Tones, and NBC.

one of my earliest childhood memories is seeing an animated version of green eggs and ham run backwards.

I think I was about 5 and can still remember the part where sam I am takes the eggs out of his mouth.

Have you seen Dr. Seuss Goes To War? It's a collection of his WWII editorial cartoons. Really, really great.

I love Dr. Seuss too - there is now a musical about the Cat in the Hat or something. I think we should have a discussion group dedicated to all things Seuss!
