What if genetically-modifying a plant was the only way to save it from extinction?
Surly if it's modified then the original no longer exists - so it hasn't been saved!
Two questions:
[1] How did it ever come to this in the first place?
[2] Are there not any varieties extant in the wild which do have seeds?
[1] The edible banana is propogate via cuttings. It's never had seeds (think seedless grapes, etc...) So it's already been 'genetically modified' in a sense.
[2] The wild ones are the reason that they made the edible variety. The wild one have too many seeds to be edible.
That said, I don't see why they couldn't go back to the wild ones and do what they did the first time.
What is the big deal about extinction? I mean ... yeah ... it'd be nice if the very weak could survive, but face it: most species that ever existed are now extinct.
Get it over it. Life, death, extinction, creation ... it's all part of the great Mandala.
"What is the big deal about extinction?"
But they're BANANAS! Sure...I wouldn't mind if a few species of monkeys disappeared, or a few ethnic groups get 'cleansed' or we blow up an entire ecosystem in war...but DON'T TAKE MY BANANAS!
