So… I pay my taxes quarterly, and my payment was due on Jan 15th, 2003. I sent in the payment on the 15th. I figured that the IRS would get the check on the 18th or the 21st (since Monday was a no-mail holiday) and then try to cash it a day or so later. I thought a full week from sending it to cashing it would be pretty realistic and it would give me ample time to move money between two accounts so the check would clear.
Well, welcome to the efficient IRS (and US Postal Service). They got my check 3 days later (Saturday), and tried to cash it first thing on Tuesday the 21st (just 6 days from when I sent it — and that includes a Sunday and a Holiday). It bounced. Ouch. Actually… I’m kind of pissed at Citibank because the money should have been in the account in time (since when did it take 3 days to electronically move money between accounts at the same bank?!). Oh well. You live and learn, although next time I’d rather not have the IRS involved in my learning process.
Your bank should cover any fees due to the bounced check. You are right, there is no excuse for it taking three days to transfer funder electronically, even between different banks.
If they don't want to cover it tell them you are changing banks ... if they still don't want to cover it, change banks and take them to small claims court to recover the charges.
I experienced similar delays with my bank. When I switched to the First Internet Bank of Indiana (long name, great service), all my hassles disappeared. You might check them out; they've been nothing but helpful.
I haven't found a good bank since moving to Illinois. So many hassles. Takes to long to move money, they deposit it in the wrong account (literally someone else's account). It's been really strange. But overall I have found most forms of customer service in IL to be lacking.
We are in the process f moving banks right now. To a credit union. Maybe it wil be better. Good thing it's not a requirement to have an account with the bank you work for. ;)
But since I will be here for a while, might as well enjoy the mountains... oh wait...
(PS. The 'remember me' option doesn't work for Safari. Not a big deal.)

Yeah, Safari has cookie issues loads of people have complained about that elsewhere, particularly in Mac-related discussion forums.
here they will even take an advance on your "supposed earnings" for the next quarter. You made xxx amount, therfore you owe xxx, and since you will probably earn that amount next year, you owe us the first quarters taxes as well. So go ahead and send xxxxxx. (But they seem to be very patient and lenient about receicving thier money - thank god!)
I have the opposite problem. We mail a check to the health insurance company around the 15th of the month - its due by the end of the month. They claim its late just about every month. The really great thing is the check somehow clears my bank before they get it, every month. I don't know what they are doing but its a mightly odd way to run a profit seeking business.
Income taxes suck. Government sucks, mostly.
You can't own private property in Pennsylvania -- that sucks. You can't own an automobile in Virginia -- that sucks.
"Government gone wild" - should be a video. Sheesh.

Huh? Please explain.
You are forced to rent from the state government, or else they'll confiscate your property/car.
They *call* it "property tax", but if you *have* to pay it and you *lose* your property if you refuse to pay it, then it's rent! You don't REALLY own it.
If it walks like a duck, and sounds like a duck ...
Next time try a Credit Union. They *usually* have your best interest in mind and won't try to skull you at every turn like most banks.
wow, this is exactly what happened to me a few weeks ago, here in canada. They expected a check on date X, so I sent it one day before and figured it would take at least 7 days to get there and get cashed. I mailed it on tuesday, at 5PM (at the post office, last shipment), and they tried cash it thursday morning! Of course, I thought I'd have plenty of time to transfer the amount between my two accounts, but nooo!
When they owe you money, you wait for it.
When you owe them money, you can bet there's someone expecting your check, ready to cash it at the minute it arrives.
Where do they not have property taxes? I thought that was pretty much a standard nationwide (save for Alaska and maybe Nevada).
I think they pay property taxes in AK. Not state taxes, but city/bourough.
