The Return of Personal Responsibility?

11 Mar 2003 by

Bobby Knight said he wouldn’t accept his $250,000 salary this year because he and his team failed to live up to his expectations.

“I’m just not at all satisfied with what transpired with our team in terms of our fundamental execution,” Knight told The Dallas Morning News for its online edition. “I don’t think it’s anybody’s fault but mine. You heard me talk after games all season long about missed opportunities and how we didn’t see things. Those are things that have got to be taught. Learning those things is just as much a responsibility of the teacher as the ones learning those things,” he was quoted as saying.

He should have kept the money to pay the legal fees from choking players.

The man is a loser. Don't care what his sports record is. Anyone who treats other people as he does is a loser.

I hope the next time he chokes a player, the player beats him unconcious. It's called "justice".

This shows Bob Knight holds himself to the same high standards he holds his players. 9 out of 10 of his players like him. I don't personally respond to his type of motivation, but others do. Apparently this isn't the first time he's done this type of thing. He apparently gave a lot of money to IU when he was there.

I don't think he dropped the multi-million dollar wrongful termination lawsuit against IU though...

Yeah, 'cause Bobby is all about taking the blame...

nice gesture. although sports is like creativity - sometimes you do well, sometimes you are lacking for various reasons. To go without pay is a bit melodramatic i.m.o. Look what happened to Wladimir Klitschko the other night. poor guy - never would have guessed that an overwieght, over-aged nobody would nail him so quickly and efficiently. I really felt for him if you know what I mean...

He also turned down all but $15,000 of his base salary last year. Of course his base salary is only a part of his total compensation so nobody should be putting out the charity bucket for Knight, but I think it is a strong gesture that helps strengthen the relationship between himself and his players and the fans. Knight may be an SOB but he's one hell of a marketer.
