2-Line Cell Phones?

06 May 2003 by

Are there any cell/mobile phone providers in the US that allow you to have two numbers on the same phone? Seems like there would be a pretty large market for this — especially for small business owners. I’d like to have one cell phone with a number for business calls and a number for personal calls (distinctive rings would let me know which line is calling). Anyone?

Yes, it's possible - at least in some markets. A friend in DC has two numbers going to one phone. I believe his carrier is Verizon. He's had this for 18 months or so.

Anyone have any experience with this feature or Nextel in general? How's the coverage? Service? Their phones are kinda ghetto, but there's one or two decent ones.

More info on Nextel's alternate line service (multiple lines, one phone).

I was unaware that this was possible. When I had my cell phone (ala AT & T - Nokia 8260) I knew you could have 2 numbers on the phone, but it was one or the other. It was like having two plans tied to the same phone, where I could choose only one. Of course, I don't know the details since I never explored this possibility at all. But if it is possible, then all I have to say is, "About damn time!".

Nextel has always felt like a strange company to me. I'm afraid to go with them. Unfounded?

The services you describe sound like a billing alternative only, not true 2-line functionality. For example, two numbers allow for separate business and personal bills. True 2-line functionality would allow you to put someone on hold while you take the call on the other line (I know you can switch back and forth on the same number); or talk on one line while receiving data on the other. I've checked around the Web for this info, but couldn't locate anything. I'm interested in the technology that would allow this to happen. If anyone has an info source, please let me know. Thanks!

What I need is a two-line cell phone that will work with two different providers - such as T-Mobile and VerizonWireless. What about this? Thanks!

I also need a 2 line cell phone that will work with 2 providers. My service is with AT&T Wireless and I need a Cingular number also on the same phone. Can this be done?
Thanks...E.

I hate involving the government but they may have to get involved ..the cell phone companies want to sell the other line at retail price and insist that it has to go on another phone ..as a small business man n the houston galveston area I need to have two lines on one phone with a 409 galveston island and a 713 houston ..the phones are all ready set up for this service ....

I need to find a cellphone that will accomodate two lines phone numbers with separate ring tones, with call waiting on each line. (It must be a flip-phone.) I can go to whichever carrier offers this but I want to check out the phones first. Any suggestions?

I have a motorola timeport that has an icon on the screen that gives the appearance that it can handle two lines. (It allows you to switch from Line 1 or Line 2). However, I have never been able to make this functional.

Also, in Italy there is a company that makes a splitter for phones that use sim cards. The splitter allows you to insert two sims simultaenously. The only problem is that you have to restart your phone to switch to the other sim card. (They are not active simultaenously).

Long story short. Sounds like a great idea. I don't know if it is available. I would be a potential customer...

At WWDC, I listened to Apple representatives make some excellent points about taking the time to build a 100%-compliant Aqua application, and I think all developers need to look beyond the code and listen to what the folks at Apple have to say
