The Sandwich Experience

07 May 2003 by

When I say no tomatoes, I mean no tomatoes. Not two instead of four. Not one instead of three. Zero instead of more than one — that’s what I mean. You see, I love tomato sauce, but I can’t stand the texture of whole/sliced tomatoes. But, for some reason, the “no tomatoes please” request almost always falls on deaf ears. Sigh…

Unfortunately, that goes for mushrooms, tuna, shrimps and nuts, too.

I used to be much worse on the tomato texture thing, but I've gotten better in the past few years. I can eat them on sandwiches as long as there aren't a ton of them.

Olives, on the other hand, are a totally different story. No olives in anything, anytime, anywhere. Not even in Martinis.

I've just about given up asking. Easier to just expect them there and pick them off than deal with the frustration of asking for no tomatoes and finding them there.

My other frustration is when they ask if you want mustard/mayo and then start putting them on the sandwich before they even get your answer!

It goes the other way too. I always ask for extra tomatoes on my sandwich and usually end up without them.

"Sandwich Artists" around the nation think I'm talking in restaurant lingo -> "Extra Tomatoes" becomes "X the Tomatoes."

yep. much easier to assume the responsibility and simply take them off! i have a friend on that atkins diet and he always asks for no potato, no bread, no whatever -- and then takes it out on the server if anything arrives that he asked off the plate. sigh.

tell them you're allergic and that you'd have a major attack if you ate anything remotely tomato-related. they listen to that kind of thing. sometimes.

I love chocolate milkshakes, but they have to be very weak or ... well ... I get "gastro-intestinal distress". :-)

I ask them to "Make it weak. Make it weaker than you think is weak. VERY weak chocolate".

That works about 100 percent of the time. I live a charmed life.

Only time I've ever seen a sandwich artist actually pay attention to a custom order was when a friend of mine ordered "so much mayonnaise you think it's disgusting"...And he got it...ew.

I like plain sandwiches. So if I'm ordering I'll usually be very specific that I don't want anything else on the sandwich, which has backfired when the server thought I didn't want fries which would normally come with it. So I'll make a seemingly easy order into something like, "I'd like a plain grilled chicken sandwich. That's just plain. Nothing else on it. Just meat and bread. And fries please."

George Carlin *hates* tomatoes. Why? There not *done* yet.

JF - I talked to your mom this morning. She was jogging down my street. You never call and when you do, never tell her anything ;)

I'm a plain sandwich eater, too. No mixin' of the meats and veggies, please. BK bacon double-cheese, mustard only. Oooh.... They get it right 99% of the time.

The smell of Subway's bread baking makes me gag. During college there was a Subway in the food court of the mall, and for some reason we always went in that entrance. It was also the Loudest Mall in the World(TM), so the combination hit you like a wall as you walked in. Ick.

tomatos are anyway not good for unless theyre vine-ripened (which is not always easy to find these days).

I have a personal chef, and what she cooks I must eat. She even gets insulted if I add any condiments.

That said ... she's a wonderful chef.

The Good Life: Wine in the cellar, cigars in the humidors, personal chef, pool, indoor and outdoor fireplaces, cabin in the mountains, gym in the house ... I *do* have it good!

P.S. I say that with THANKFULNESS, and NO intended arrogance. Please believe me.
