New Zeldman Book: Designing With Web Standards

14 May 2003 by

Snoop Zeldy Zeld’s new book, Designing With Web Standards is now available for pre-order at Amazon.com. Do everyone a favor and buy a copy. And, oohhh… At $24.50 it misses Amazon’s free shipping offer by $0.50, so be sure to buy something else too.

The sample chapters look strong...comprehensive yet not overly technical.

Um.. nothing to do with the book, but reading the $0.50 review on Amazon, Emenem is the CEO of Interscope? Am I reading this right?? I quote:

50 Cent is the biggest buzz emcee since Eminem (who just happens to be his label CEO)

Huh? I remember hearing that the guy from Limp Biscut was a CEO of a record company or somesuch as well.. am I missing something? Popular artists now get to run the companies? And piracy is the record industry's biggest problem??

if eminem is the ceo of a record company, it's shady records, which is part of aftermath, which is part of interscope. (i think that's how it goes). 50 cent is signed onto shady records/aftermath.

I don't think the chapters look strong at all. Couldn't he use something more complex than a two-column layout for his example project?

One thing, Zeldman looks like a bit of a tosser, so why put a photograph of him on the cover? The bobble-hat is symbolic - an arrogant, self-obsessed man endlessly waffling about something people are already aware of. Fantastic. With many of you, you're following the adage "Tell people something they know, and they'll thank you for it".

Zeldman remains a tosser.

Perhaps Stuart can write a book for us covering things we don't know. Unless it is just jealousy speaking.

Hafta agree with Stuart. I really don't understand the trend in a lot of tech books to put the author's mug on the cover. ;o)

(ok, Im gonna try this with no HTML since it keeps jumping my comment...):

Whatever Stuart. You got a bad attitude - I think you should join the the icy hot stuntaz: http://www.geocities.com/thestuntaz

I think Zeldman is great - I learned a ton from him back when I decided to go into designing webpages. Besides Laura Lemay, he was the only author I could read without falling asleep. And these two were the only ones I could understand as an absolute beginner. For Laura, you had to buy the book, Zeldman was online, accessable and free. Its about time that he earns some money for all that hes given.

Who did the typesetting? It's not very good.

Can anyone find a "table of contents". None of the sites list it. This is always the first thing I look at when buying a book.

For those of you who have never met Mr. Zeldman (me up until about three months ago), you don't know what you're missing. He is an unbelievably kind and nice guy with a passion for helping people. I saw him speak in Albany, NY, and in between sessions, he and I talked for about a half hour, when the next session was supposed to start up after 10 minutes ;) The kinda goofy pictures of him on his website with the shady eyes and the winter hat make you think one thing, but then when you meet him, he's completely different.

I just ordered an instructor copy of this book.

I enjoyed the two sample chapters and I am hoping to use the book for my class.

On another note, I understand the books cover is somewhat goofy, but didn't you ever hear of the saying "don't judge a book by its cover"?

Zeldman is the guy who taught me how to design websites when I started in this business. He is also one of the main reasons we have support for standards in web browsers, and designers who know how to use standards.

When I started back in 1996 there were four teachers. Laura Lemay's book taught HTML. Lynda Weinman's books taught web graphics. David Siegel's book taught design. Zeldman taught all these things and he gave it away free. Over the years he has continued to give it away free, publishing a great magazine (A List Apart) and daily tips. I'm glad he's finally put out a book.

About the cover, I don't think he's trying to be a movie star. The cover is an enlargement of the home button on zeldman's site. I think he went with that cover so his book would be visible on the crowded shelves. To people who know his work, that cover image will pop out of the crowd. I could be wrong but I think it's just Zeldman saying hi to the many people who know his site ... not an ego thing.

I think most people at least respect the guy. Get over the book cover thing. But still, has anybody seen at least a table of contents? Kind of hard to make a judgement without understanding what the book will actually cover.

Those who don't like Zeldman either haven't read his words or have poor taste. I don't care to think about either of those groups, so I won't speak of them.

On the book tip, the Hillman Curtis book is most excellent, best read on conceptual design approaches. Zeldman's first was also most excellent (although a bit too simplistic for those following him along at home), perhaps a follow-up post would be in order after we all read Jeff's book. Oh, I would love to meet him, perhaps he is speaking this summer? Does anyone know? (I will be in NYC sometime this summer, it would be most excellent to meet Mr. Zeldman)

The table of contents is up on the mini-site.

Really saddened by a bit of unnecessary abuse towards Zeldman in this thread.

I think the man is probably entitled to a slice of all of our earnings - a number of us wouldn't be in gainful employment were it not for the knowledge he has shared.

The reason I think he's the best thing since sliced bread is that he's found, like Hillman Curtis, the way to communicate with people that doesn't scare/patronise/intimidate them. I've never found his work to be anything other than encouraging, generous, and inspiring.

We need more Zeldmans!
