That was a private letter from Martha to me and you had no business reading it!

Jason, you're right, it is textbook.

Martha's enemies dislike her for one reason: class envy.

To that point, I'll never understand why petty people are so jealous of success and actually *want* successful people to fail. Myself, I'm *inspired* by the success of others.

*shrug*

I've never had a problem with Martha for her success -- you really have to admire someone who has both the creativity and business accumen required to build the empire she has.

But I've also sensed that her wealth and power has given her too much of a sense of entitlement to special treatment and placed her above the law. Not that many CEOs seem to be any different.

As much as I she's trying to paint it as men can't deal with a successful woman, I think it has a lot more to do with the Enron, Tyco, Worldcom, etc. scandals plaguing Wall St. In another time, it may have blown over, but Wall St. realizes that in order to regain confidence of investors, the executive suites and boardrooms need to be cleansed of those who think that they can play by their own set of rules...

hmm, ... I read it a bit differently, emphasizing all the I's by using them as the first word in the sentence.

p8... Common mistakes people make when being indicted. I mean, it's easy to forget to proof out the Is in any letter, let alone one that is being written amidst this kind of mess.

Almost everybody says I about 400 times per e-mail, why would Martha's writers be any different? I don't see it as any indication of anything unique, but just a failure to cover up the obvious.

Don, I think your one reason for people disliking Martha is too simple. There's a lot more to it than that, although that's probably part of it.

One of the big reasons people dislike her is because she can come off as pretentious, pandering, condescending. There seems to be a bit of an implicit message of "I find this so ridiculously simple to do, why can't you do it even though you work 50 hours a week, have to run the kids to band practice and soccer games, clean the house, cook and keep your husband satisfied." She's created an image of virtual perfection around her, and I think people are comforted by the fact that the facade is crumbling a bit.

But, the biggest reason is something that's very pervasive in American culture: the love of creating celebrities and the greater love of tearing them down or piling on when they've started their own fall. "Schadenfreude" may be a German word, but Americans have perfected the behavior.

Steve, sadly, I believe you are correct.

Like Sammy Sosa.

If she decides to bribe the government with cookies and other baked goods for life, she'll get away with it. I mean, she's 61 now, it'd be like having a mom always around to bake you stuff- how can you turn it down!?

Doug ... LOL ... you're right, too! Gimme my German Chocolate Cake and you can go free.

Martha Stewart is my Dagny Taggart.
I can't help but love the woman.

Jason,
You should have the courage to defend Martha Stewart instead of adding ironic remarks about "Textbook" writing style. Wren is right, Martha Stewart is our real-world Dagny Taggart. A rare hero. Love her. Protect her.
