Jumping The Gun?

13 Jun 2003 by

g5 cube Check out this text ad from CDW (found at MacNN). Mac g5? Cube? Are they getting a little ahead of themselves, or is this an honest typo mistake? I wonder. [Thanks Richard]

I think they are jumping the gun a bit. There will be a G5 sooner or later, but I don't see the Cube coming back (unless to mark an anniversary).

They may be selling used/overstock cubes...it was such a poor seller that there must be some left around. I kinda liked the design myself, especially the fact that there was no fan.

The G5s may be introduced at the end of this month, if that's what they're going to call systems using the new PPC 970 chips. The Mac rumor sites are saying that a redesigned 15" Powerbook using this chip is already in production.

The rumor site posted by hurley #1 is also saying the new anniversary edition MIGHT be a G5 Cube. My fingers are crossed.

There have been many rumors floating around about the "G5" or as noted above the PPC 970. I know Apple likes to get all dramatic on our asses, but it really would behoove them to tell the public when the "G5" will be coming out if it's not this summer.

The G4 desktop line is limping so bad it might as well be dead, and all the "pro" users I know (including myself) would sooner shoot themselves in the foot then purchase a new tower. The potential burn factor is extremely high, noone wants to be the idiot who bought a 3 grand G4 only to see a 3 grand G5 come out in a month. Therefore the longer you wait, the less sales Apple sees. they probably also want to avoid the embarassing inventory problems they had in the past.

So as a long time Macintosh fan I know I'm wasting my breath here, but please Apple, give us break ok?

left over Cubes

Funny thing happened on the way to discontinuation for the Cube: The Cube got popular. Ask any Apple retailer. As soon as the discontinuation was announced, sales skyrocketed of the unique computer. And, as any Cube owner will tell you, they love their Cubes. I'm sure the MoMA does.

PS- the Cube lives on in the current Mac lineup. It lies beneath the iMac.

My understanding is that the new chips are still based on some G4 architecture, but, then again, what's 'G4/G5' other than a marketing label. I suppose they could call it whatever they'd like.

Regardless, the new chips are a long time coming. The G4 line is dead. As much as I love my 664/TiBook, it is slllloooooooowwwwwwwww.

As for the Cube, I agree with the statement that it became quite popular after it was discontinued. I still say it is one of Apple's best designs, just completely put in the wrong price range. (It was completely useless as an OSX workhorse for a design studio.)

A G5 cube would certainly be an appealing product if it were priced better and/or upped the video capabilities. (That said, I don't know if I'd ever go back to a desktop...)

The G5 architecture will be very different from the current hacked architecture.

Something is wrong with an consumer OS when it takes a GIG of RAM just run at a decent speed. It wasn't that long ago machines were shipping with 32MB of RAM.

I guess it all depends on what you define as a "decent speed." My G3 iBook does just fine with 384 MB of RAM and did fine at 256 as well. It is a bit pokey but not annoyingly so.

actualy, it was about 6 years ago that machines shipped with 32mb.. but when a 1gb chip is $150 whats the point in whining?

Basic economics. New OS? Oooh! Shiny. Must have it. Bloated. Makes computer slow. Need new computer now. New shiny computer! WHat? New OS? Oooh! Shiny! Must have it...
