Thanks and...

Thanks to everyone for the great discussions and insights over the past month. Blogging SVN has been fun. But before I go…

a: Apple breaks its own rules. When updating iTunes to 4.01, the installer automatically changes OS X Font Smoothing preferences without warning. So all your smooth fonts suddenly become bitmapped. I first noticed in Fetch, then Photoshop started thorwing errors. Whatever happened to software letting users know when it decides to change their settings?

b: Any recommendations on an affordable color printer to satisfy a picky graphic designer?

Change in the templates to ... It will fix those ampersands (that throw errors) in the entry title.

:-)

Well, it stripped out my HTML ... just add encode_html="1" to the mt entry title.

Canon i950. Epson Stylus Photo 900.

Good, not pro, but good, cheap color prints. Nice photos on the i950

I'm also looking for a color printer, but I want color laser (I need speed). So does anyone know of an affordable (uh... less than $2500?) but high quality printer for a picky designer?

We have a HP DesignJet 10ps which has worked pretty well - at least after a couple of rounds of software RIP upgrades HP sent out. Super-fine quality. Very, very good.

Those looking for a printer, should take a look at the Xerox Phaser 8200

Luke, thanks for the discussions.
Nice to have had a guest poster who is not a SVN regular.

Yeah til now I had a Phaser 780, back from when it was made by Tectronics and cost $6,500. Maintenace and supplies for it made it quite an investment. You had to continually replace fuser rolls, imaging unit, waste units, not to mention the 5 toner tubes. That said, it prints like no other. Gorgeous!

Luke, thanks for the great discussions. You came up with some really informative topics. Will be hard to replace.

The next guest will be announced shortly... Hang tight.

And, yeah, thanks so much Luke! Great topics.

i was checking out xante laser printers recently, apparently they've got true-to-press-color and the whole shebang. They also print up to 13 x 19 inches, unfortunately, they also go for about 5-6k depending on the model. thats not even including fusers/toner, etc. but definately sounds like a dream machine..

I would have to recommend the Epson 1280. There's a summer $100 rebate on the printer which goes for $500 usually.
The prints are fantastic for 13x19 on everything from Luster paper, premium gloss, watercolor paper, and high quality ink jet. You'll never complain about the quality.

Don't buy epson printers. According to a dutch consumer organisation they have a chip that stops the ink cartridge from printing after a number of prints even if you can print 10-100 extra pages. This is because they are afraid of refills.
