Not really in the "coolest" category, but I've always been fond of the silliness and blatant misinformation of the Hooters logo.

I've always loved the logo for The Harris Bank:

www.harrisbank.com

Also, I like the art deco feel of the McCarthy Building Companies' logo:

www.mccarthy.com

The names are pretty boring, though. My favorite "company" name is Effengüd Software.

Bank of America

That's one of the worst logos I've ever seen. I suppose it's OK if you're resigned to serving a niche market. Very tasteless, tho.

To be honest none of these seem like a cool combo at all. Maybe I am just lame. Not too many companies go for the "cool" effect, just the one that seems to work.

"Cool" in a funny way.

I'm partial to Blambot. Perfect name and perfect logo for what they offer and the audience they cater to.

I've always been a sucker for Cingular... Very cool logo and a catchy name.

I think what mr. scrivens and "pb" said. most of the logo/company names are very bland or boring. I like the names of kaliber 10000 and cuban council. as for logos? umm... the apple logo has decent brand recognition. ha. find a good logo/name combo and you've got something.

Mmmmmm ... makes me want a Cuban cigar ... mmmmmm.

I was always partial to the Wax Trax! logo.

I love the Saturn logo. I know, I know, it's really swooshy - but, damn. That's a good logo.

Speaking of celestially inspired car companies, I actually like Subaru's name, which means "The Pleiades" in Japanese, referring to the constellation, which appears on the logo.

And yes, I realize that "Subaru" spelled backwards is "U R a Bus!"

Shout out to my local boys silverorange. That's right, no capitalization - can you handle it?!

Can't top Nike and the Swoosh for simplicity, recognition, or relevance to the product and the product's ideals. Pretty cool.

Try Logoistic. BTW, I'm not related to them, just like what they do and though of suggesting their work.

Yeah, Harris Bank is my favorite too.

But check out Streams' logo... just because I work there doesn't mean that I can't recognize cool 3D stuff when I see it, right?

And, oh ya... 37signals' logo is hot too (the dot thingie, not just the stylized text). ;)

The current logo for the Tour de France is nicely done...clever but not overly so.

Flight Club, anyone? (this is a link to the inside page because the front doesn't have the full logo sexual orientation functionality, which is killer)

Oh come on pb, it's an amoeba with a gun. How is that tasteless? It's kooky, it's weird, it's funny, but I don't find myself offended. Have a sense of humor.

10 Jul 2003 | Don Schenck said...

Perhaps pb doesn't like guns.

I think FedEx is the best name and logo pair anywhere. The name FedEx sounds "express-like" in everyway and the brand name is now so common that FedEx has become a verb in American business vernacular. Plus, the FedEx logo is among the all-time greats. See anything special hidden between the 'E' and 'x'?

The theme of 'express' is everywhere. Absolutely perfect.

If it comes to great logo's i'd have to support the fedex vote, as for a cool name/logo combo i think we score pretty highly with MediaMonks :)

First post on signal vs noise by the way, have been a regular lurker and love some of the discussions.

Flitcroft, I've been pointing out the arrow for years. Amazing how people have never seen it!

11 Jul 2003 | Steve said...

I had never seen the arrow in the FedEx logo till now.

Two of the most recognizable and versatile logotypes I know are those of the North Sea Jazz festival and of the International Film Festival Rotterdam. (Yes, both logotypes are Dutch :-)

North Sea Jazz
The combination of the trumpet and a full set of tall-ship like sails describes the essence of this musid festival in a sublime way. Plus the way the circle extends from the 'h' and fluently ends in the 'z' is nice, apart from some typographic details, such as the way in which the 'J' in jazz precisely extends the 'h'. Class act, as far as I'm concerned.

IFFR
The tiger comes up in several versions: completely (with the head looking back), or only the head of the tiger, or sometimes only the stripe pattern of the tigers' body is used.

One of my favorites is a simply stated logo for a little company called Wingspan Technology Group, Inc. www.wingspan-tg.com.

Passion has the best logo and name. www.passionnow.org
