I’m curious… What sorts of blogs do you visit or frequent most often? Blogs with full entries that are usually updated once or twice a day (like Kottke or Signal vs. Noise)? Blogs that have mini-entries that are updated multiple times a day (like Coudal)? Blogs with full entries/essays that are updated less frequently (like Daring Fireball)? “Essay-based” blogs (like What Do I Know or Anil Dash)? Or constantly updated blogs with entries of all sizes (like Boing Boing)? Do you prefer blogs with single or multiple authors? Or are you all over the map? Or…?

Interestingly, there's very few blogs I actually visit. I do aggregation, baby. I've got 134 subscriptions and I generally don't visit but a couple otherwise. Yours is one, xblog and bblog are two others. If a blog seems moderately interesting on first blush, I'll subscribe to the feed for awhile and see if I like the writing.

So, in other words, I visit all kinds but I don't visit many.

Well first I visit Pseudo Design :). Actually what I do is just go to Simon's blog and follow his blogroll. I just like to follow people's links who I trust.

Lately I've been drawn to link lists, as seen on Kottke, Anil, and Sippey. I suppose I'm drawn towards good moderators that update frequently, and it seems like link lists are a great outlet for them. (126 feeds, and counting!)

SvN and that's it.

I *want* to start my own blog, kind of a "let the world in on my life of silent desperation"-type of thing.

Now that I think about it, I have a complex blog taxonomy. At the highest (Kingdom?) level, there are meta-sites and blog aggregators, such as Blogdex and Popdex. Below that are popular, bloggish sites like BoingBoing, Fark, Slashdot and Kuro5hin.

From there we go to popular, single-author blogs. I tend to eschew most political blogs, as I'm Canadian and they're inevitably obsessed with American politics. But I read several popular technology blogs such as Gizmodo, Oblomovka, etc.

Below that (we're now down around the Genus level, I guess), things take a notable geographic bent. Most of the 'unpopular' blogs I read are Canadian, and most of them are in or around Vancouver. I'm a member of www.vancouverwebloggers.com, so that's probably partially to blame. Still, I like the sense of knowing about the people and places that these bloggers are talking about.

I'm more of a message board type of guy, besides here and slashdot. Gizmodo is cool for my gadget obsession.

As for browsing blogs, check out daypop.

Blogs written by a single author. And one who can actually write well. That's why I frequent Gawker, Mighty Girl, Kottke, and The Sports Guy. The downside: Quality writing takes time which means these sites often aren't updated as frequently as others.

I have a pretty eclectic listing of blogs I frequent: simplebits, the reverse cowgirl's blog, dollarshort, WebDevScribblePad, The Morning News...

What makes me read some over others (I choose not to read a***p*x** and some others) is because I do not believe in their politics or world views. Other than that, interesting writing that makes me laugh draws me back again and again.

Also, I must admit that the coolest thing about beta testing TypePad is finding all the secret *alternate* blogs that many popular bloggers have... 'nuff said.

Oh ya, Josh, I read yours every day... both of them ;)

Well, of course i start off every morning checking out my favorite weblog, Reently. Of course that's mainly to see if my alter ego has posted something before I did last. Then I move on to Net News Wire, which is an absolute godsend. What do I read there? A quick stop at Reently will reveal my OPML list (although, I've modified it since then, if I were home right now, I'd upload the newest, but this one's 95% good, where's dotMac-OPML-sync when you need it?) and the list of my cohort. Hope no one isn't expecting plugs in our posts

But to summerize, I read all the blogs in the original post (save Anil, although I do read it occasionally, and it should probably sneak in to the list along w/ Coudal--of which I finally got to see their Western State series, which is great, thanks to my new DSL), and all types (big, multi-authors all the way down to small indy ones). Topical and random themed. Variety is the spice of life.

I'm with Don.. SvN unless there is a link to another blog. Interestingly enough, even tho I don't agree with him often, I would probably visit Don's blog fairly regularly :-)

15 Jul 2003 | Anil said...

I'm an essay type blog? It's funny, I see the links as the main endeavor now and the posts as almost incidental. I guess it shows in the quality of writing there....

And BC, you don't read my site? :( I will PayPal you $4 U.S. if you just poke in once in a while. C'mon, it'll be great! I'll write something interesting just for you.

I really like the concept and purpose of Cam's newest blog:

http://www.watchblog.com

Unfortunately, in practice, it really isn't delivering much more than tired right wing vs. left wing banter. Which is a shame.

15 Jul 2003 | Don Schenck said...

I wouldn't waste time with right- versus left-wing stuff. I'd probably ask a lot of questions ... observations ... stuff like that.

It'd be boring.

15 Jul 2003 | Don Schenck said...

Okay, for now, I'm going to give this a try. It's miserable, really, but perhaps I can succeed in a "he's so pitiful" kind of way ... yathink?

Introducing my blog, "We Already Have One".

P.S. Premium cigar delivered via postal service to the first person who tells where I got the idea for the name!

Um, lessee, was it from here?

15 Jul 2003 | Don Schenck said...

haha ... nope, hurley ... but EXCELLENT link nonetheless!

15 Jul 2003 | hurley #1 said...

No, wat, I've got it -- it's from here, where bc says "Don, you should start your own blog." And so your belated response is, "we already have one!"

If that's wrong, I'll give up.

15 Jul 2003 | Don Schenck said...

Hurley, you are SOOO clever ... but incorrect. Damn I wish you were right.

It's okay, I don't smoke cigars anyway, and besides, I live in Canada where you can buy Cuban cigars on any streetcorner.

15 Jul 2003 | Don Schenck said...

ARGH!! Gotta rub it in, eh??

15 Jul 2003 | Don Schenck said...

Okay, I screwed up anyhow; it should be "We Already Got One".

From Monty Python And The Holy Grail.

15 Jul 2003 | Bill Brown said...

If it's from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, I thought it was "We Already Got One": Scene 8.

15 Jul 2003 | Don Schenck said...

Bill, you smoke cigars???

I guess I'm not a real big blog reader. I tend to hit all the news sources plus sites like Fark and MetaFilter. Blog-wise, I only read SvN and Instapundit. Otherwise, I read some other sites that aren't really considered "blogs" but are basically the same thing. Like GeekLife and Slanty.

I like the idea of multiple authors...I think it makes the site more interesting, instead of getting the same dose of the same person every day. My own website is a multi-authored semi-essay format. Ironically, I usually don't care to read sites with articles as long as my own. On the other hand, I like to see more than an incomplete sentence with a link to a story, with no commentary given on it.

16 Jul 2003 | fajalar said...

Don, this may be just me, but when your page loads the bottom half of it disappears. And I can't get it to reappear like I can with the comments on this site when they disappear.

It's probably just me, but thought I would tell you.

16 Jul 2003 | jarrod said...

Out of curiousity, care to provide a list of blogs you read JF? I'd be interested in seeing what blogs the 37 crew finds worth reading.

16 Jul 2003 | Don Schenck said...

Fajalar -- thanks. I put it on Blogspot for now ... I HOPE to move it to my server Real Soon Now (r). That'll fix everything.

16 Jul 2003 | Don Schenck said...

P.S. -- it's doing the same thing to me, Fajalar.

16 Jul 2003 | Brandon said...

Jarrod, you sure like 37signals' trademark highlighting, don't chya? At least you give them props.

16 Jul 2003 | Bill Brown said...

Don: No, I don't. How about you enjoy it for me?

16 Jul 2003 | Don Schenck said...

Bill -- OK ... thanks! Another excuse to spark a Cuban.

Fajalar -- working for me now. Methinks I mangled the template, which isn't a surprise.

I'm an idiot. A loveable idiot, mind you ... but an idiot, nonetheless.

16 Jul 2003 | jarrod said...

Brandon: Yes, I definately do. While I work on reducing my self-promoting body copy (this is my first go at it), I think it's a good way to point out things without making them look like links. Gotta love short attention spans :)

16 Jul 2003 | Don Schenck said...

Now, my son has a blog. Where does it end?

16 Jul 2003 | ~bc said...

Anil, yes I do read your blog, but not regularly. I need to add it to my NNW. Hold off on the PayPal, but if you want to influence me, please hook me up with a TypePad beta test site that I'm very intrigued with and have some ideas for you guys regarding that, but I can't really share them with out playing around first to test their appropriateness (sp?). Shoot me an email, I'd be more than happy to discuss.

i like blogs that provide terse but funny information. if i want news, blogs are definitely not the place i go for it (unless it's news about what my friends did last night after i left the party).

16 Jul 2003 | Steve said...

SVN is the only blog I look at with any regularity. I have a hard enough time keeping mine updated, let alone looking at others. Too many other things to do in the day. And as for my blog, I feel like I should actually say something interesting instead of just rattling on aimlessly. Not that that stops me in real life or anything.

25 Jul 2003 | larika_brazil said...

That aspect varies a lot ,I like to visit blogs that holds my attention to it, it doest matter how frequently the person updates it. Some of my favorite are daily updated, but some of them are updated like once a week at most! Some people have a lot of time to spend in making their blogs and some have to squeeze their schedule to let us updated.
I am just curious to read original and funny writings...
