Monarch in Chicago

Snapped some shots of a Monarch Butterfly outside my window this morning.

That's cool to see one in the city! They should be starting their southward migration shortly; mid-August is usually when I see them start congregating.

I used to think that the Monarchs that arrive in the spring are the same ones that left for Mexico in the fall, but they actually take several generations (a generation being just a few weeks) to make it up as far north as Chicago or New England. There's some good information on Monarchs and their migration here.

We have a Butterfly Bush in our yard, and we get several butterflies, including Monarchs, throughout the summer. Gotta love it.

We are going to see the monarchs popping up in blogs according to their geographic distribution, then.
What a marvelous tool to track their migration and their numbers!
