Well, my month as Guest Poster here is just about over. Big thanks for spot! I’d be a fool not to throw out a general “Request For Ideas” to the fine readers of this site for improvements to Meetup.com (or my side-site, Fotolog.net).… Fire away!

Hi Scott,

Well, you asked for it!

I joined webstandards meetup at the beginning of the year and encouraged many others to join as well. While it is a wonderful idea in concept, it only took one meeting to realise some major drawbacks.

1. There is no easy way to contact members within the group, so there is no form of interaction apart from the meetings.

2. The voting system did not allow us to select a venue that was suitable for an actual meeting. No matter how many members voted for a specific venue (that was not on the original short list), it seemed that we had no control.

3. We had no control over dates. We wanted to meet regularly, but less often, and this was not possible.

At our first meeting we all agreed that while meetup was a great tool, we needed to address these concerns. We started our own meetup, established a mail list, a website with a growing range of online resources and now hold our meetings in a venue where we can do full presentations, with projectors etc.
The Sydney-based Webstandards Group

While we are very happy with the group we have established, it is a little sad that it started as a "meetup" group, but we had to abandon the system for something more flexible.

So, if your are asking for ideas for meetup, I'd have to say the ability to set up mail lists that encourage interaction within a group and more control over selection of venues would be a good thing.

Just thought you might like some feedback...
Russ

I think you could expand your market considerably if you created a version of Meetup for people in heaven and another one for people in hell. Dead people with common interests and backgrounds have never had a good way to meet each other. With Meetup, now they can. Think of the possibilities: Aristotle meets Einstein and Richard Feynman. Attila the Hun meets Hitler and Idi Amin. Instead of spending their time shoveling clouds or pitching coals into the fire, these folks can finally find someone to talk to and do something productive with their time.

Oh, and now that Santa Claus is dead, I hear he's running for God in the next election. Meetup could provide an excellent way for him to build up a network of supporters up there.

At WWDC, I listened to Apple representatives make some excellent points about taking the time to build a 100%-compliant Aqua application, and I think all developers need to look beyond the code and listen to what the folks at Apple have to say
