Have a Favorite Illustrator?

11 Sep 2003 by Matthew Linderman

We’re looking for an illustrator to do our book cover (we’ve got a concept but the style could go in a few different directions). Any suggestions?

Claire Robertson has a great style. She did Powazek's book (though I much prefer her other work). Also, my friend Geoff Gibson has a great style (see a collection of my favourites and his complete collection).

A designer her in Tokyo, Junko Yokokura does pretty good work. She is fairly diverse, but has another site of illustrations in her signature style. When she gets contacts from abroad I often handle the communication for her, as her design sense is great, but her English isn't. If you'd like to get in touch with her, feel free to e-mail her at the e-mail address on her site, or you can send the e-mail straight to me, and I'll make sure that she gets and understands it.

Kevin Cornell. His sketches are wonderful, lively and human like the approach at 37signals.

Illustration or book cover design?

I know he has a sick dog, but I don't know if Dean Allen, of Cardigan Industries and Textism fame, still does book cover design.

These folks do some beautiful stuff, though I am not sure it is the 'vibe' you would be looking for.

Just out of curiosity/naivit: it looks like quite a few of these illustrators' sites are done with Flash. Is that because Flash offers better ways to show off artwork, or is Flash perceived as more "artistic" in terms of providing more creative control, or is it just that they're trying to be trendy?

I have no idea how the 37s crew are going to choose, every one of the people linked from this page is enormously talented!

You can have your cover done in a superhero, comicstrip style, while at the same time learning about the new superpower, the EU!

(actually I think a superhero, comicstrip style would be pretty cool. just an idea.)

try chris ware. he is a chicagoan, noted comic book artist and does lots of illustrations. his line style is super clean and would probably fit nicely with your content.

I really dig Arthur Mount's style. Though the technique seems to be overused nowadays, Arthur's work remains really special!
