Johnny Cash

12 Sep 2003 by Matthew Linderman

“I am not obsessed with death I’m obsessed with living. The battle against the dark one and the clinging to the right one is what my life is about,” said Johnny Cash (1932-2003). His death is sad news but no surpise to anyone who’s seen images of him lately. On the positive side, it’s great that Cash had an artistic rebirth in the past few years — the series of “American Recordings” records he made with Rick Rubin are wonderful. The recent video for “Hurt” (a Nine Inch Nails cover), directed by Mark Romanek, works as a nice eulogy.

Johnny Cash and Warren Zevon - true artists who were creating and releasing music until the very end. They will both be missed.

The music world connection is complete with this tidbit: John Ritter was the son of country music singer Tex Ritter.

Johnny Cash was a stud; ditto Zevon. Been a bad week. I'm going to commemorate them both this evening at the cigar bar.

As much of a musical contribution as both Cash and Zevon both were (Warren Zevon I know nothing about), I would have expected them to pass on- not John Ritter. As important of an influence in the world of entertainment as they were, Ritter simply made me laugh- and I like to laugh.

Country music doesn't do that.

I was more shocked and bewildered when I saw the morning reports of Ritter's death.

Sad.

As a person who enjoys nearly all forms of entertainment-
save reality-based game shows, I will never look at Three's Company again without wonder how John's wife and youngest daughter are doing.

Same with country music and NineInchNails.
