When Low Means High

19 Sep 2003 by Jason Fried

Why are gas prices at near record highs when oil prices are at 4 month lows? 92/93 octaine Premium is around $2.20/gal here in Chicago. Of interest: How Gas Prices Work.

An interesting thing that I didn't see in that article, relating to why gas prices often (but not always) go up right away when oil prices change (as opposed to selling gasoline purchased at a lower price for a lower price). I learned this, believe it or not, from Microeconomics 101: in that case, the gasonline is priced based on how much it will cost to refill the gas station's tanks when empty, not on how much the gasoline in the tanks was worth when they were filled.

IMF warns trade gap could bring down dollar
"The International Monetary Fund yesterday warned that the colossal United States trade deficit was a noose around the neck of the economy, emphasising that the once mighty dollar could collapse at any moment."

Gas prices, adjusted for inflation, are nowhere near record highs.

It also turns out that on the second page of the very site you linked confirms that prices are only about two thirds of the record, adjusted for inflation.
