Come on, Ofoto, You're Better Than That

24 Oct 2003 by Jason Fried

Sneaky Ofoto form

Ofoto is a great service and a very well-designed web-based application. Their copywriting is clear, design is crisp, and their forms are refreshingly short and to the point. For example, to register all you need to do is fill out 4 fields: first name, email address, password, and password confirmation. This is a Good Thing. But, the registration form is deceptively sneaky. Take a close look (above, red boxes are mine)… On the left you have the purple section with the form fields and the “I agree to the terms of service” checkbox. You’d think that was it and you’d click the “join now” button to continue (which is exactly what I did). However, if you look in the upper right corner, you’ll see an additional checkbox that signs you up for their mailing list (and this checkbox is checked by default). Pretty sneaky detaching that sign-up checkbox from the rest of the form. Come on, Ofoto, you’re better than that.

Anybody want to comment on other online photo services? I'm increasingly frustrated with Snapfish's upload mechanism and I've got a large virtual pile of photos to upload and get prints made.

RealPlayers installer does something similar. You have to really dig to unclick option boxes for updates on events, offers and emails. Lame, but you have to understand that they are trying hard to trick you into becoming marketing data.

I use iPhoto and am very happy with it. Of course, it is not a Web application in terms of being accessed through a browser but the underlying system could easily be turned into a Web site/application if need be. As a matter of fact, the concept is identical to iTunes although iPhoto is far less complex.

Can anyone get Ofoto to actually save your password??

I can't ever seem to - which means I have to register all over again - having to remember to avoid their mass mailing snares.

I was using PhotoAccess for a while (but have had a dry spell of actually getting photos printed). I was really impressed with the quality, and, at the time, they were working on an OSX stand-alone app to facilitate uploading.

If they didn't sign you up sneakily like that, they wouldn't have anyone on their list.
