"Defensive Design for the Web"

25 Nov 2003 by Matthew Linderman

Finally. We’re pleased to announce the title and release date of our book: “Defensive Design for the Web” will be published by New Riders Publishing on 02/20/2004 (meaning it should be in stores about 10 days after that). More details soon, but you can pre-order from Amazon.com today

In related news, Design Not Found features a crop of new entries on defensive/contingency design. Check out these snapshots: Bank One (“Reset Headache”), U.S. Postal Service (“Obscure Codes Mean Nothing to Regular Customers”), Yahoo! Chat (“Top 5 Questions”), and Register.com (“No to That, Yes to This”).

Yes!!

Its too bad that doing an college independent study doesn't qualify me to get a free test copy.

So is this book actually written by all the guys at 37s? Since the book has been so long in the making, I'm assuming that Ernest Kim probably has a couple chapters, maybe even Carlos Segura?

Just wondering...

It's sad how long it takes to get knowledge onto paper and into the (concrete) streets.

This effort has been in the works for... how long?... 18 months? 24 months by the time of publish date?

37congrats. I'll be sure to look for it. Cheers.

Much like software, quality takes time to produce. Especially when it's from-scratch versus enhancement.

Congrats, 37ers. Let me know if I can get an advance copy to review for the mag. Seriously.

Who won the naming game that y'all staged a while back?

I just hope you guys are going with the "thoughtful gaze into the middle distance with hand on chin while wearing a black turtleneck" look for the jacket cover.

Great title.

Can't wait. New Riders seems to be a pretty knowledgeable publish when it comes to who to pick up for publishing goods. Any insights into how you got a deal with them?

I have to admit, the expression "defensive design" is catchier and easier to comprehend than "contingency design". That seems to be the response from my clients. Also, that title should do very well in stores. Congrats, 37crew.

You mean like this one?

Actually, no one. Check the thread.

We pushed and pushed and pushed for Making Mistakes Well, but the publisher just wouldn't allow it. So, in the end we settled on "Defensive Design for the Web" which we are happy with.

Brad, I love it!

Man, Amazon.com has the name wrong in their author line--I hate it when people write the name like that (37 Signals instead of 37signals).

Yep. I filed a correction. We'll see.

At WWDC, I listened to Apple representatives make some excellent points about taking the time to build a 100%-compliant Aqua application, and I think all developers need to look beyond the code and listen to what the folks at Apple have to say
