Well Read?

15 Dec 2003 by Sarah Hatter

The San Francisco Chronicle has ranked the best books of 2003 and I was surprised to find only one (1!) familiar title. ( McSweeney’s Mammoth Treasury, at that.)

I’m not sure if I should be embarrassed or not. How could I have missed all these books? Am I not watching enough Oprah?

I've heard of several in there, but I probably have a bit of an edge in terms of living in California and therefore having heard of or known about several of the California-centric books on the list.

I've only read one (that I know of - I gave up on looking through the list after about 10 screens; what is this, a listing of every book published in 2003?): "The Devil in the White City." Best piece of historical narrative since "In Cold Blood," if you ask me.

I'm ashamed to say I never knew who Maxine Hong Kingston was until now. Wow, she's an author! Now I know who they were talking about in that song "Cock Mobster" when they said "I'm sticking taxing, long things in Maxine Hong Kingston".

Where can we find more information about this?
