Meetup is Looking for Design Help

02 Feb 2004 by Jason Fried

Our friends at Meetup are looking for a talented NYC-based freelance/contract designer to help them with their redesign and feature expansion. More details on their jobs page. Scott, Peter and the rest of the crew have been a pleasure to work for (we designed the original Meetup site and some other stuff for them), so if you’re looking for a good gig and a chance to work for/with great people, this could be the one. Good luck.

"redesign"?

note the "freelance/contract" language that is being used. the original was probably done for free or otherwise reduced rates and the 37 crew simply isn't willing to do it again.

yet another option is that since the original site is quite possibly one of the worst graphic designs ever posted on the web, the founders are looking for any excuse to have a second chance.

whatever the excuse or spin from either side, it's over because of lack of money, generosity, or design skills. ouch.

That was pretty harsh buddy, why don't you own up to the comment?

I find meetup to be well organized and fairly attractive. The type has a thoughtful and well-crafted feel. I would reject much of lost in translation's comments unless he feels the need to articulate his claims with some specifics. General negative comments are shit; specific and just negative comments are grand.

Jeez, the site only changed the face of American politics. No, it wasn't just the design, but it played a big part. Everything made it successful. Take something away and it wouldn't be what it is today.

It does need work though. I remember signing up when it first launched. The site has certainly become a bit ragged. I get the feeling Meetup added (piled on?) a bunch of stuff to the site that 37 didn't design for. It feels like it lost some of the simple direction of the original site.

I think that's all too common of a problem. Agency-designed sites are rarely maintainable by the client.
