Did April 1st come early this year? Donald can wait, we want Basecamp 2.0!

Dude, you should. It's the perfect "Jason Fried" TV show.

Don? Wanna be on TV?

06 Feb 2004 | ed said...

why, in god's name, would you subject yourself to that? the only reality tv show i'd subject myself to is 'Survivor'. ok, you have your point. do it. but please win. for us. the little people.

I'd enjoy seeing Jason talking about how good or bad Trump's usability is.

But Jason, what of 37? What if you were to win?

Forget Survivor. Eco-Challenge (the parent of Survivor) is the way to go. Not sure if it is still going though, since the site only shows races up through 2002.

You wouldn't really want to be the court's jester, would you?

Please do.

You. Must.

yes, go for it Jason. As reality TV goes it is getting very good reviews amongst my smartest friends, its got to be better than fear factor.

I think if you are seriously considering this, and seriously asking if you should, then I'd like to see how you'd answer the questions on the application...

- How would your co-workers describe you?
- Describe a major event or issue that has affected your life
- Tell us an embarassing story about yourself
- Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
- Why are you successful in business?
- Why do you believe you could ultimately be "The Apprentice"?

If you do, we can all joke that JF will forever stand for "Just Fired". They'll shorten it to "Fired" around the 37Signals megacomplex long after the show is done.

"Hey Fired, you finish those wireframes for XYZ corp yet?"

And if there is a heated debate between you and another apprentice, you could just settle it in a footrace to one of the dozens of Ray's Pizzas in NYC.

I'd enjoy it more if you signed up for 'Elimidate.'

You just want to see yourself do push ups on tv.

Yes.

Do it. Bring Shenck with you.

Being the son of one of the greatest Frolicious white men the 70's has ever seen (and the 80's and the 90's), I think JF is just drawn to The Donald's hair.

I think that Trump would require that you agree to drop your business entirely (but only if you were the last man standing). So the question really is: what's more important and has greater value?

Interesting idea though. It could be a huge win for somebody... possibly launching a career in major corporate management.

I could be "The Donald" also!

Hmmmmm ...

Hold out for the next Simple Life.

09 Feb 2004 | bah said...

I agree with Coudal - I would rather see you on 'Elimidate' or even 'Blind Date'.

Chris is right. Do you want to abandon 37signals for a year because I think that's what the winner has to do?

If you're cool with that, then I say go for it. You'll have "Jason Fried, Usability Firm Owner" or something whenever you're on camera. Make sure that entering those terms into Google lists you as first result and you're golden. I'm sure there's plenty of businessmen out there who watch the show and might want to see you have a crack at their sites.

This thread is alredy #2 on Google when you search for Apprentice 2.

J, you have that made for TV face, and SUCH a charming attitude that they couldn't possibly refuse your audition. AND i'm sure your teamwork amongst a big ol' bunch of over-qualified kids would be great fun to watch. Don't worry about what everyone's saying about 37. Do it for your own stardom ;)

Reminds me of the 2-3 days when I seriously considered running for California governor. Could be a wild experience Jason, but I'll gather than the truly valuable experience is what you've already went through, where you went through a lot of serious thought and visualization of how choosing to or not would change your life. That was valuable to me. And in that case, it saved me $3,500.

i don't know

Why would you want to work for that asshat?

13 Feb 2004 | The "Old" Man said...

Go for it--The Donald should welcome your design expertise- if not for his web-site then certainly his "pompadour."

I would, except I'm Canadian. Okay, no, I wouldn't. Damn, just too many choices.

As someone who *has* applied for reality TV shows -

Do it. If nothing else, there is a 99.99% chance that you won't get on the show, but if you make it pass the initial screening processes, the experience is something else, and you can tell people at cocktail parties and on websites, "look! I applied for a reality show! i'm zany and multi-dimensional!" And you won't have that sense of regret of "damn, I should have at least applied for the Apprentice, that would have been fun."

And if you do make the final round, well, stress about it then.

I'm already offering 100$ to anyone who makes it to the interview stage of The Apprentice 2, in an attempt to raise the odds that more people might just apply.

Maybe some others will step up. Personally I'd love to have some more enlightened, though still entertaining, contestants for the next version.

I applied. Moreover, I've lanched a web site -- opportunityservices.com -- wherein I detail:

My Plan To Win A Spot On The Apprentice 2 -- By Helping You Win A Spot!

A key excerpt:

In anticipation of being interviewed for The Apprentice 2 in March or April (I already submitted my application and the required videotape), I am preparing a presentation that explains why:

* Donald Trump, NBC and (NBC's parent company) General Electric are best served if The Apprentice 2 is set at the White House, where the 16 apprentices would help President Bush's then-newly appointed "opportunity czar" create more good jobs for Americans

* Facilitating growth of the customized lifelong learning and career services (CLLCS) industry is the best way for the czar to create more good jobs for Americans

* CLLCS '1.0' will synergize and build on Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VOIP) telephony, blogs, social network search and, of course, reality TV

-----

Hope this helps.

Good luck!
