Book: Now Shipping at Amazon & BN.com

08 Mar 2004 by Matthew Linderman

Defensive Design for the Web Cover With HandsAlright, our book is in the house. “Defensive Design for the Web: How To Improve Error Messages, Help, Forms, and Other Crisis Points” is now shipping at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

It’s been a loooong process but it’s great to finally see the real thing, hold it, and leaf through it. In case you’ve missed the previous posts about the book, we’ve created this page that includes a summary of the contents, testimonials, sample pages, FAQs, and a link to download a chapter.

If you prefer to buy offline, it’s expected to be on bookstore shelves in another week or two. Also, it may still take a few days yet for other online retailers to start shipping it.

If you read it and like it, we’d really appreciate if you’d write a review on Amazon. Positive reviews can really help to drive sales. Also, if you spot errors or just have a comment to share, please write email@37signals.com.

Defensive Design for the Web OpenHere’s one last testimonial, from Mark Hurst, founder of Creative Good: “Defensive Design for the Web shows you how to create a good customer experience even when things go wrong. If you work in user experience or usability, you have to learn what’s in this book.”

Thanks to everyone who helped to make it happen.

Just received the shipping-confirmation from Amazon while reading this :-)

Oh, and I spotted an error: there must be something wrong with the RGB-values for the cover...

Who's hand is that in the photo? It's very manly.

Just read through the example chapter and it looks good, plain fashioned advice for something that is overlooked again and again, I'l look for it in my local chapters store.

I did notice on page 84 of the PDF chapter the university of washington gets a thumbs down when it seems to have done something good, you guys have something against the 'huskies'?!

How does Amazon already have used copies for only fifteen bucks? Your tech editors got rid of their copies already? :-)

Hey Miles, I saw that as well, when the PDF was first released.

My question is "When will I see it at my local bookshop?"

oh, and congrats!!

Anyone read Ani Phyo's book (the one that is offered together with Defensive Design as Best Value offer) ?!?

Received my shipping confirmation from Amazon.com too. I pre-ordered the book and was charged $20.99 although it's now listed on the site for $17.49.

I sent customer service a note and they promptly refunded the difference to my credit card.

Has anyone else noticed pricing discrepancies?

It's Ryan. And yes, he's very manly.

Got me.

I did notice on page 84 of the PDF chapter...

Nothing against the Huskies, just a slip-up. Thought we caught this one in time but it got through. We'll be creating an errata page so let us know if you spot any other errors in the text.

My question is "When will I see it at my local bookshop?"

Should be a week or so but it really depends on local distributors and stores. If you don't see it soon it may be worth asking just to make sure they're getting it.

The book's price was cut before publication. That's why it changed from $20.99 to $17.49. You should request a credit from Amazon for the difference if you pre-ordered and they charged you the higher rate.

First thought when i got my book from amazon - where are all of the colors? Having the book black and white seems kind of annoying

We had to choose between full color/more expensive and B&W/more affordable. We went with the latter. While color would've been nice, it didn't seem essential. We like that the book is so affordable.

Errate Report:

On page 147 of the book under the thumbs down EXPN TOO CUTE caption:

The image here doesn't seem to match the caption, and it is the same picture as appeared earlier in the book (for ESPN I think)

Also, When I went to designnotfound.com the companion website listed throughout the book there was not errata page or report errate here link to be found. My next thought was to go to the New Riders book page, but the link to New Riders was to the top page and not the book page as I would have expected. I searched for the book title there, and found that there is no errata page there either. Finally I came to this blog, clicked the archives link, and found this post to point out errata. Have to give 37Signals a thumbs down on that one. ;)

I'll let you know of any other errors I run into as I read through the book. Enjoying it so far!

Found a typo.

On the... would you call it a colophon in the front of a book?

Anyway, the page that has copyright, trademark notice, the ISBN and such. The Warnings and Disclaimers paragraph has "Peachpit Pres", missing an "S".
