Literary Idol

16 Apr 2004 by Jason Fried

A little Friday fun. Ok, so they turn books into movies, but what if you could turn a book into a song? Which book would you sing?

A short book. Perhaps Wil Wheaton's Dancing Barefoot, and particularly the bit about William Shatner.

Beowulf, either in the original Old English or a modern English translation. Still one of my favorites of all time.

From Track #27 - Make it fast, not cute

Slow-loading pages
large blocks of text
or inappropriate wit
can make crisis points
even more daunting
and difficult to overcome

Oh come on, someone had to, right?

Psalms.

Oh ... wait ... they *are* songs. :-)

The phone book! I'd have a song like "Eight six seven five three oh nine ...". Oh ... wait ... drat ... *that's* already been done.

*sigh*

I'm out.

It's already been done. Check out the first Fantomas album. It's an all-star band with guys from Faith No More, Slayer, The Melvins and Mr. Bungle. The album is a book and each song is a page - no song titles, just page numbers. It's based on an old comic book about an anti-hero named Fantomas.

Their other albums are also concept-based: the latest is an album with only one track, 74-minutes long, that's supposed to be a soundtrack for surgery.

Finnegans wake already is a song.

Actually, I've always felt 'We have the facts and we're voting yes' went extrememly well with 'A heartbreaking work of staggering genius.' Something about the bittersweet-ness of life or something. I'll shut up now.

btw, the album in question is by Deathcab for Cutie and the book is by Dave Eggers.
