Strange bedfellows... Or are they?

07 May 2004 by Jason Fried

Speaking of razors… A razor and screwdriver promotion spotted at Walgreens. Why not, right?

"Buy this razor and we'll screw you on the price of the blades!"

A rare moment of honesty -- albeit oblique -- in consumer marketing.

"I'm a manly man." They should throw in a pack of rubbers too.

I can't believe they're trying to pass off a 7-bit screwdriver in this day and age. Why can't they go fully 8-bit clean? Don't they care about international users?

I think you're on the right track there with their marketing effort. Wasn't it this razor that had the stupidly goofy, overly sensual / sexy Super Bowl ad?

"Screw" is the key word here for manly men, but it has nothing to do with cost of the blades.

I bet in prisons they would call this a weapon pack or maybe a shank pack plus.

ROTFLMAO... how appropriate, indeed.

So.. do I.. do I shave the screwdriver?

I've always found razor advertising more than a little odd. Mach 3? A razor blade... at mach 3? Thats just scary, not enticing.

They're not co-packed, but I passed this odd combination at Jewel tonight.

The women's version, Venus, was running a promo pack with a free Secret deodorant.

Lesson learned: men love to screw. Women love to have dry, nice-smelling armpits.

I actually bought one of those in January and the screwdriver is as good a general-purpose screwdriver as I have ever used. It even includes two Torx bits, so it's geek friendly.

The other night at the supermarket I saw an even odder combination - Dr. Scholl's gel shoe inserts, packaged with a small battery-operated radio. I have absolutely no idea what they were thinking.

I'm with Michael. I got one in last year's promo and use it all the time. I look at it that I paid $7 for a screwdriver and got a free razor.
