Ro London collects shopping cart icons and says GUESS? is the only online retailer to try this nifty idea of incorporating the number of items in the cart into the actual shopping cart image. [From his collection of 300 of “the most interesting, unique, and beautiful formations of pixels to display.”]
We usually explicitly write out the number of items, eg. "Shopping Cart (3 items)".
For an example (pardon the plug), see the new Mozilla Store.
Guess site only goes up to ten items. What happens if you buy 11 things?
Attis,
Thats DNF material :)
See, it's marketing really. If a site like amazon, aber and fitch, bevmo, the gap, etc. told you how much you had in your bag, you might think that it is enough and STOP shopping. If you are running in the dark, then by the time you have gotten to the "Checkout" phase, you are commited to your goods and you will by them all.
Much like, books and music online... ALL of those stores would rather have you IN the store rather than on the net. That's why you can get coupons for books and music that read. "Valid in store only. Excludes online purchases, gift cert......" because those stores know that a book/music shopper (online) is targeted and not apt to browse the store and MAY even have their speakers off. So, if the store can lure you in, let you hear a HOT new artist, or see the HOT summer reading list, that you are 73% more likely to impules buy and buy more, so it is worth it for them to give you X% off a purchase, etc.
Marketing researchers are evil geniuses, so beware.
CB2 does it.

It sure looks that way, but a quick overlap mouse drag reveals that it is an image with a span.
CB2 does it, but they have that stupid

bug in their user interface. IMHO -- if I click on "Add to Cart", I want ONE. If I want more, I'll go to the trouble of typing a number. Why is this so hard for web designers to figure out?
I've just been discussing the amount of detail required for an on screen Shopping Carts with a client. How much detail do people feel is needed?
Just a link to the cart?
a link with the number of items?
an onscreen total?
or the works: a full readout of the items, with subtotals, etc?
My conclusion was something like this:
1x Rosemary Conley workout
1x Yoga Mat
TOTAL: 27.99
What do people reckon?

Roger, good point. But what happens in a case like this?

Yes, that is a problem. Seems like evidence that they are heading down a wrong path for their design. It would make more sense to have a "Add to Cart" button after every "quantity" box.
I do respect their aesthetic design, however.
