From the Back of the Room

25 Jun 2004 by Jim Coudal

As some of you might know, 37signals shares a big, lofty studio space just west of the Loop in Chicago with Coudal Partners. Today that space is filled with folding chairs for The Building of Basecamp Workshop. For some of the CP crew, that means a nice, breezy, well-deserved summer day off. For others, it’s a chance to watch the guys in action and maybe sneak into the lunch-line too. For Jason, Matt, Ryan and David, it means a day full of PowerPoint Keynote slides and no time to post to SvN, so I thought I’d chime in.

Time permitting, I’ll see if I can get few candid snaps or bits of video of the 37s crew doing their thing to post here later. Meanwhile, what should we chat about? After Basecamp, the most talked about thing in the city today is the weekend series between the Cubs and the beloved White Sox, starting this afternoon at The Cell. If the Sox can get to Prior this afternoon, the whole weekend ought to fall right into place…

I have a topic:
From site planning to graphic design to web implemtation and delivery to management, What are the top 25 things every web designer should know?

They should know that Prior's gonna shut down the Sox lumber tonight.

Jim, just sit in the back of the room and annoy the boys with your laser pointer. Hilarious antics will ensue.

Those poor Sox. The Cubs are just too hot to handle, too cold to hold.
Actually, next weekend will be even better when the Sox travel to the Northside to face-off with the Cubbies.

I'm looking forward to eNjoying the game from seats at Wrigley on the 4th of July.

mmmmmm Cubbies

For a bunch of " knuckle-dragging drill-press operators who live in brick bunkers, drive 10-year-old Geos and wear biceps tattoos," there sure seem to be more of us Sox fans online than Cubs fans, in spite of the ratio encounted on the street. Maybe they're just too drunk to work the mouse?

I've posted my Crosstown Series preview over at Chicagoist.

Let's talk about Illinois Senatorial Candidate Jack Ryan's problem(s)..Just kidding.

Does Clinton's new book deserve all the hype?

Will the Chicago Bulls ever be the dominant team they once were?

Is From Justin to Kelly one of the worst movies of all times?

Would the world be a better place if everyone owned a MAC (yes)?

Will the Cubs ever win a world series?

Jim-

Your a South Sider? A Sox fan? Man, I feel dirty just saying the name of that team...

Did John Terry foul Ricardo for the disallowed goal?

Ed, "too hot to handle?" The Chubs?

I thought Chris Carpenter handled them quite nicely.

Between "butterfinger" Bako's passed ball and "windmill" Kim waving Sosa home for the out, they didn't look too hot to me.

Please come back anytime, and bring Ordoez, too!

I've lived in Chicago for 10 years now and I just can't seem to like any Chicago sports team.

I'm from Baltimore originally. I was 4 when the Baltimore Bullets moved to DC (did you know they were the Chicago Zephyr before coming to Baltimore?). I cherish my adolescent years during those Orioles' World Series appearances and the years in between (1979 - 1983). It was a magic time -- probably the perfect time in a boy's life for his home team to win the big one (I was 14). The very same year football was ruined for me when the Colts snuck out of town.

There was a glimmer of excitement last year for the Cubs, but I still just have trouble liking any National League team. What can I do to get over that? I want to like the Cubs.

Really the only thing I know anymore is that I still hate the Yankees. That will never change...

No, that was a terrible decision by the ref. I think Sven etc are too polite about it. The refereeing for the tournament has been disgraceful.

"No, that was a terrible decision by the ref. "

Right decision for the wrong reasons I think. There was definitely an arm round the keeper (which will prompt most refs to give the foul, benefit of the doubt generally going to the goalie) and Terry was possibly offside too. But that's not why the ref called it: he clearly indicated that he saw a push, which simply hadn't happened.

Anyone here attend the Building of Basecamp workshop? Any reviews?

Lisa, there is a review here.

And a comment for the 37'ners ... what does your office look like? I've always imagined that it's one of those super trendy kind of lofts with wide open spaces and what not. Can you share some pictures?
