Captain Apple

02 Aug 2004 by Matthew Linderman

Steve Jobs’ cancer surgery went well but it begs the question: What would a Jobs-less Apple be like? It’s tough to think of any other large company that is so dependent on one individual. Could the Apple ship keep sailing straight without its captain? Previous attempts aren’t very encouraging.

I'm sure this is a question Jobs himself has an answer to.

If anyone can micro manage from beyond the grave, it's Steve Jobs.

The crown would be passed down to his son Ronnie Jobs. He is 9 and loves macaroni art.

What would make me more optimistic regarding future changes in power is that Steve Jobs himself could hand-pick that successor to reflect his values and vision for the company. In the past, those in power were clearly not on the same page as he was.

I dunno, even if he picked someone who shared his values and vision, there's really only one Steve Jobs. His unique personality, drive, and genius probably contributed as much or more to the renaissance of Apple as his vision.

It's very easy to imagine Microsoft sailing off into the future without Bill Gates. It's much harder to imagine Apple without Steve Jobs. They will need a real visionary, and it's very hard to find visionaries who also know how to run a business successfully.

I could do it. I'm willing, too.

Think I'll go sit by the phone and wait for Steve to call ...
