Interesting lighting ideas

10 Aug 2004 by Jason Fried

You’ve already got a TV, why not use it to throw some color when you’re not “using” it? Talk about a simple idea. And then, there’s the resourceful “why didn’t I think of that” balloon lamp. [Thanks Carlos]

The grumpy environmentalist in me feels compelled to point out that using your TV as a lightbulb is not exactly an efficient use of electricity.

That said, it sure is cool.

The English translations on this site remind me of a can of iced green tea that I picked up recently, which carries the slogan: "We Present Mild Body and Aroma to You"

I get the same effect when I put a music CD into my TV's DVD player - only I don't get to choose the color - all I get is a light blue.

Aside from not being the best use of electricity, it's probably not doing much for the burn-in of the monitor either.

But, as Brad noted, it is a cool idea on the surface.

Oops, forgot that the balloon lamp is cool. I wonder if that could be built into a long-lasting helium balloon, so that you would have free floating lights.

What if somebody pops it?

Well, I guess you either buy or sell another one - depending on which side of the cash register you're on... ;)

Not much of an investment piece, I guess.

It also shortens the life of your TV. They are rated for only so long... why shorten it, especially if you have a $10,000 screen like in the picture.

Well, if you can afford to drop $10k on a TV you can afford to use it as a mood light.

I like the idea of a free floating helium balloon light ... just let a bunch go in the night sky and BAM! instant Art Bell topic.

Another way to use a TV as a mood light:
Save lots of toilet paper tubes. When you have enough to cover your TV screen (one open end facing the screen), group the empty cardboard tubes together, honeycomb-style, and glue or rubber-band them together. Cover one of the open ends with vellum. Put the other open end in front of your tv and turn the tv on. The colors get diffused or refracted or something--it's beautiful.

Here are more Balloon Lights. They are tiny, super bright, and create a FREE FLOATING lighted balloon. Can you say UFO?
