We all know it’s really tough to really “see” a product online — especially when the product shots are about the size of a quarter. Let’s build a list of online retailers (or resources) that offer really large product shot views. Here’s a few I’ve found to get it started:
Bigha weld detail ( more), Tirerack’s 1000x1000 SuperView, Digital Photography Review’s product reviews…
Post yours as comments.
Apple does it pretty wel too, even though you wouldn't notice at first. The product shots you can view are actually much larger images, so if you view them seperate from the webpage they come with, you have really nice hi-resolution shots.
Bigger is better, I hate when a product has its, enlarge link only 25% larger. I want to see a bigger picture and I am willing to wait for it to download if it is larger.
here is my
bad example
A good example is Veer and their
Image zoom, It uses flash to zoom in on the stock photography to see the finest details.
I've always liked that HBO has such large photos.
Nice shiny chrome detail.
StarTech.com does a good job with photos. You can count the pins on any cable they sell ( example photo).
We did a site for a company that sells reproduction antique furniture hardware from Connecticut, Horton Brasses. Since their products are hand-made, the detail and finish is really important to see - so we offer a large view, or if you have the time/bandwidth (and we warn you about the size first), we have a really huge closeup (about 800Kb jpeg).
We also do a site for a hand-blown crystal company. Again, nice large photos.
So yeah, I'm with you. Up with the large product photos!
I'm not thinking of any right now, but this is totally a great point. I'm sure it gets lost along the way, but if I can't see something in fine enough detail then there's every chance I might not purchase.
In other words, has anyone ever not bought something because they clicked on the 'larger' image was just too damn big?!
Nearly nothing peeves me as much as a 'larger' link that javascripts a new window with the exact same image. Thanks for playing.
www.cruthfield.com has some of the most detailed product shots I've ever seen.
Check it out...for a single product:

An example of their biggest offering:

I love it.
I've always been impressed with Newegg's product shots. Not only are they a great size, but many of them include photos of power cords and other accessories included with the product.
As a usability & uxp consultant it irritates the h*ll out of me when I see the little black cluttered dot that supposed to be a camera or phone.
Nokia has a nice entry: http://www.nokia.com/nokia/0,8764,33325,00.html?appId=9300
And if the company does not do it, I will:

What stinks about some of these though, is that they're relegated to the PR section of the site. It's great if you know to look there, but a "typical" user never sees these great shots.
Apple and Nokia are guilty of this. And Bigha has some great photos inline but they could link to the bigger photos in context, rather than just a dedicated media gallery.
Sorry for the plug but I recently worked on this site for pool tables that shows bigger than usual images. Here's the Vintage Classic Pool Table.
I've heard before that pictures are what sells over the web. My thoughts on this: Price Proportional to Pictures.
If I could chime in as someone who wants to learn how to display products better, any suggestions for books (handbooks, training materials, booklets...)? Amazon's " look inside the book" is a good model...any other suggestions for displaying books online? Is a gorgeous shot of the cover an important investment? Or is it better to invest more time in "look inside" features and clear product descriptions? (Or both?)
Bosch-Siemens has a nice feature when you want a big picture of a product. You can zoom in and set the zooming area.
The adress is

Unfortunately, the site is in German, but you should be able to test it by clicking on "zoom".
Greetings from Germany,
Michael
The color of that Bigha bike is about my most favorite-ist color in the whole world.
I just wanted to share that.
