Ever notice how the best albums don’t blow you away immediately, you just find yourself playing them again and again?
The latest to sneak up on me like that is Ataxia - Automatic Writing. ( iTMS)
"Blueberry Boat" blew me away immediately, but I know what you mean. Everything else that I enjoy was a dislike at the beginning.
Broken Social Scene You Forgot it in People
I know those - the ones that make you wonder at first what made you spend your hard-earned money (or bandwidth, depending on how you get your stuff) on it. However you don't get wholly turned off by the music after first listening and rather try to understand the artist's intentions through a second, third or fourth audition, and then, usually there comes a nice surprise; you find parts that you really come to like and become instant favorites of yours. Good music is like fine wine: It is an acquired taste that takes time to appreciate and digest properly.
For the same token, one could say "Top 100" songs on a singles-driven market are the equivalent of a quick burger and soda at Mickey D's. You figure out the rest.
Rilo Kiley The Execution Of All Things. Their current release More Adventurous pretty much gave me shivers on first listen because it was so good, but the previous two discs have taken a bit more growth time.
I thought this was a well known and well established phenomena.
It often happens to me when a) the album strikes an emotional chord with me that I don't often pick up the first few times through but happen upon when it starts playing on my iPod and I have the time to really listen, or b) the albums music and/or lyrics are very richly layered and for the first few casual plays, you don't even pick up on the elements you later find to be your favorite parts.
Meanwhile I find that albums I like on the first play through quickly fade into obscurity and get unchecked or deleted from iTunes.
An exception to the last statement: I loved Neutral Milk Hotel's "In the Aeroplane, Over the Sea" the first time I heard it and years later it remains my favorite album of all time.
Pinback's albums are like that for me. Try Summer in Abaddon. It takes many listens to appreciate the depth of their music: the subtle harmonies, the often ambiguous lyrics, and the hypnotic rhythms. I never get tired of their music.
Yes this is absolutely the case with most really good albums. Back in 2000, I was a huge fan of Radiohead. When I first listened to Kid A, I was so disappointed. I just didn't get it, I thought it was interesting, but crap compared to their previous works. About 10 listens later, I finally understood the brilliance of that album.
As for In the Aeroplane over the Sea... I liked that one at first, but thought the solo guitar songs were too long and boring. Only when I really listened carefully (and understood the Anne Frank connection) did I come to really appreciate that album.
Johnny Cash - American IV right now.
Will get Johnny Cash - Unearthed any day now :-)
Wow! thanks JF. I've been really wanting to like the last 5-8 years of the Chili Peppers output, but I've had a really hard time doing so seeing as though they continue to suck so hard. (Well, their '99 album was pretty good actually.) I've always liked John Frusciante but I guess I listened to the rumors too much and assumed his solo work was heroine-induced crap. I really like ataxia so far.
Coincidentally, just a two days ago while reading about Frusciante on wikipedia I noticed he was doing a project with Joe Lally. Strange combo of an ex-junkie and a straight edger. Being a fan of both artists it sure does sound interesting.
What I love are the albums that blow you away ASAP and keep getting better with each listen.
I was like that with The Flamming Lips (Yoshimi), Death Cab (Photo Album), Radiohead (Kid A) and the Cure (Wild Mood Swings).
That's just me.
Yeah, good points all. Going back aways I couldn't stand Patti Smith's Radio Ethiopia the first time I heard it but now the whole thing is an all time favourite.
Maybe it's a case of familiarity breeds content ... ment
Mmm. Yeah. I know exactly what you mean. I bought Jeff Buckley's Grace during all the hoopla that surrounded the five year anniversary of his death. I found it used, so it wasn't too much of a gamble. And to be quite frank, I didn't see what the hubub was about. Then I took a short road trip and forgot the rest of my CDs. Grace was already in the player and got three solid spins. Suffice to say that I was converted. What an amazing album and and amazing talent gone too soon.
"The Meadowlands" by The Wrens. The first few listens I thought it was okay, but then suddenly it clicked and I realised its true brilliance. And Trout Mask Replica, that took about 20 listens to grok.
