Our buds at Threadless have redesigned. Once again they’ve done a great job combining HTML with Flash to make browsing, using, and buying the site a fun experience. I especially like the rate a submission page — cool little effect as you mouse over the numbers. And then there’s the good bling bling humor on the gift certificate page. Well done guys.
And, oh yeah, a free 1-year Basic subscription to Basecamp is included in the 1st Prize Package for their latest contest. Check it out!
While it is one of the better combinations of flash and HTML I've seen in a while, I still find the flash unnecessary and not really adding anything that that couldn't be accomplished by other means. And I really dislike the use of flash in the nav, as at times it starts changing the nav on mouseover, which was very distracting and confusing.
There are a lot of other things to like. I love the "shop what's in stock" page and the fact that it not only shows you which specific sizes/colors for each design are in stock, but has little thermometer scales to show you how much is in stock. That is brilliant.
Fun, but if I see that "New Contest! Check It Out!" pop up one more time... I may sink.
Lovely design though.
Agreed that the Contest promotion could be quieter...
A nifty thing I found was right clicking on the navigation flash component at the top revealed a navigation menu. Quite nice.
Are the shirts sweat-shop free?
I love the site! ....what disturbs me though is how many of their customers take pictures of themselves in the t-shirts. Some with multiple shirts even. Sure the shirts are cool. But do I *really* want to see your melancholy or tough guy pose in front of a mirror? No. It's like a sad cry for hipster recognition....
I've been a customer of threadless for several years now, so the new design is a surprise. The old one seemed to work really well..and it doesn't seem like they've added any new features. Just a facelift.
Jamie - they ask customers to take photos of themselves. Personally, I like seeing normal people in the shirts! Models get old.
What is the connection between 37signals and Threadless? I was unaware that there was one until this post. I just thought they knew how to do a great store!
There is no formal connection between 37signals and Threadless, except that we're friends and we live and work in Chicago.
Well, OK, fine... We own some of their shirts and they use Basecamp. So we're totally connected.
eliot, I totally agree about the "normal people". I just don't wanna see some overly hip designer making the depressed or tough-guy melancholy stare. It's just not very flattering to the shirt design.
Another re-design that doesn't declare a background color in the CSS or HTML. So unless everyone's default background color is white, it looks kind of odd because of the images on the websites that have white backgrounds. I see this a lot with recent designs posted by 37s and now Threadless (wow, I'm wearing one of their shirts right now).
Am I missing something? I always thought you should write in the background color for the HTML body, but you guys don't seem to do that anymore-- even when you have images on your website that have white backgrounds. I'm kind of confused about the whole thing. And the last two times I asked about why the background color was left out, I was ignored, so hopefully this time someone can shed some light on the situation. Thanks.

I think it is considered a non-issue anymore since browsers default to white since like netscape 2.0... good point though, i went ahead and changed it on Threadless - it certainly can't hurt!
Mine is set to grey (but the default was white, I manually made the change-- although I admit that a lot of my reasoning for making that change was just to see who didn't declare a background-color for their HTML body).
Anyway, thanks for replying. Extra points for actually going through and making the change on Threadless. Now re-stock that damn Corporate Zombie shirt! lol
So what is threadless running on? I was thinking of setting up my own t-shirt site (super-limited runs, as I am doing it for fun, and don't want to invest much $, merely show-off my creativity). Anyway, what type of inventory management/e-commerce is threadless using? I like the new design too.
We programmed all of the inventory management, ecommerce, fulfillment system, etc ourselves ... it's kinda what we do ... see skinnyCorp ( www.skinnycorp.com) owns Threadless. We also make a bunch of other fun internal projects, we kind of create our own clients.
