While David makes the move to 37signals, I’ve made of move of my own this weekend: to NYC. I’ll still be 37signalling but will be working remotely from here. Why the move? After over a decade in Chicago I felt the need for a change of scene. I had great experiences out in Chicago but I felt like it was time for me to escape the midwest.
So I drove all my stuff out to my new apartment in the East Village on Saturday. Moving was hell but it was also a great purge. I had accumulated so much stuff during my years in Chicago and it was amazing how much of it was just crap. It’s a tough challenge to fit your whole life into a 10’ truck but it makes you realize what you really need and what’s just taking up space. It feels great to be streamlined.
So I guess our email signature just got a lot cooler…”37signals: Chicago, New York, Copenhagen.”
Does this mean any discussions or workshops for 37 signals in NYC?
Yes, we're still interested in doing a Building of Basecamp workshop out east and NYC would be a great location for it. This post discussed what we're looking for:
Were ready to put on a Building of Basecamp workshop on the east coast (preferrably NYC, Boston, or DC), but we dont know where to do it. Wed like to stay away from sterile hotel conference rooms. Does anyone have any recommendations? Anyone with an office, loft, or gallery space that can handle 40-50 people want to rent out their space for a day?
Let us know if you have ideas/suggestions.
Try Craigslist.org in NYC; the SF version frequently has people looking to rent interesting space by the day for parties/showings/etc. I would suspect you can find (if not post and attract) a similar situation in Manhattan.
Now all you guys need to do is find a programmer in Tokyo and then the email sig will be absolutely amazing.
If you want a loft for the workshop or party, check:

welcome to THE City.
Matt you will find that NYC is a lot like Chicago, except the pizza is better.
We have Illinois, New York, and Florida. Definitely need to add some international representation.
Good luck in NYC, and with the virtual-ocity.
Welcome to the East, Jason.
Oh, and the pizza is better here than in Chicago.
Wishing you the very best in the Big Apple--
Stuart & Susan Fried
I second Will's note about the pizza. Welcome to the neighborhood (well, if that neighborhood includes Newark, NJ, anway). :) You'll definitely want to check out John's Pizzeria, generally regarded as the best in NYC.
So, does your new presence in New York imply that 37signals will be doing lots of cool conferences out here?? :)
Florida? I would love to see a workshop near Orlando!
Oh, and speaking of restaurant recommendations:
if you're going to Madison Square Garden, one of the best places to eat a quick dinner or carry out is Soul Fixins on West 34th street. It's small, and more of a International Soups (a.k.a. The Soup Nazi; another great place to eat)-style stand.
Just to clear things up, Matt was the one who moved. I'm getting IMs and emails saying "Congrats on the move!"
True, I may follow Matt out to NYC sometime later this year, but for now home is Chicago.
I have an opening in my schedule if you need someone to warm up that chair in Chicago now that Matt is gone to the place with less-than-adequate pizza.
Try The Art Director's Club . It's a beautiful space (see the "gallery" page). Or you might try The Drawing Center in SoHo on Wooster. And for a truly alternative venue, you could go with Rooftop Films in Blyn.

I'm looking forward to "Chicago, New York, Copenhagen, Tokyo" (although you won't be coming for the pizza).
