Explain Podcasting in 10 words or less.
hype term for mp3 file without music
A fad that I don't care to understand. :)
Internet radio broadcasting for the common man via iPods + MP3.
Interesting.
Audio syndication for your iPod.
Ham radio for the internet.
like a poetry reading, but, you know, without the poetry
A new, fancy term for old stuff - DIY broadcasting.
Podcasting is to radio what tivo is to tv and rss is to websites.
Oops, i went over 10 words, but they are short words.
Podload a voxblog now, listen when convenient.
Do I get extra credit for making up two words? :-)
becomingly browsed boring blowharrds bellowing screetching sonic syndications @ shallow simpletons
On-demand Radio (look, only two words).
(Piggybacking Andreas Haugstrup)
On-demand radio distributed over the net (and into mobile devices).
Radio recorded from the internet for the very cool people.
audio blog
Broadcasting for the rest of us.
Smart audio. For my amusement, at my convenience.
Niche public access radio available anytime anywhere.
Broken VCR tuned to public access TV (more channels soon).
was around before, but now rebranded with hype name.
Heh. People just love to hate memes (trends... whatever). I'm guilty of it from time to time as well...
Good thing Odeo doesn't seem to have married the term itself... just the function.
Then again... even if they did... people would still love it. It's just that the haters are always the squeakiest wheel.
RSS for audio.
roughage for your mobile audio diet
Thanks for this. Confused about the new term when it seems to be an mp3 recorded broadcast.
Download radio broadcasts and listen to them later.
Audio blogging without the speed or random access of reading.
Pull broadcasting without the professional voices.
Like talk radio, with all that that implies, without commercials.
Choice nuggets of audio punctuated by 'umms' and 'ahhs'.
Radio which can
Include seven dirty words
Dropped into iTunes
the lovechild of technology and the fifth ammendment.
the lovechild of technology and the fifth ammendment.
Portable. Audio. Blog. People. Connections. Open. Communication. Music. Thought. Fun.
Overrated bandwidth-gobbling non-event that perpetuates the word 'pod'.
Audio that automatically syncs to your portable device via subscription.
The important part about podcasting is the "pod". This is new. Just making an MP3 available for download is not a podcast. You need a way to subscribe to it (RSS enclosures) and have it download and sync for you (NetNewsWire + iTunes, for example).
Internet = countless radio stations; iPod = audio VCR
I have no idea.
TiVo for Ham radio.
Rants, on demand, in stereo (sometimes). iPod and RSS compatible.
This is a good exercise. For the record, I tried to listen to a show, but found it to be incredibly boring. Just like blogs and web pages in general, a few gems and lots of crap. I haven't found a gem yet, but I'm not looking that hard.
Here's by entry, though (I cheat a little with some improper words):
Audio shows by Internet-folk synced to iPod; kind'a like radio.
noun
Internet audio broadcasting; often coupled with a blog.
1. Subscription
2. Radio
2. By
3. and
4. For
5. Everyone
mostly noise
Podcasting is the hypesatisfactic marketage for distribulation of auditory snips.

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner!
No radios are harmed during the creation and distribution of a podcast, so it isn't real suitable word for describing one. Broadcasting seems to imply that more than 5 people are being reached, so it's out.
Hype for personal audio show?
or with a little less cynacism,
personal audio show syndication. pass.
amateur internet radio
Audi-blogging.
I find it ironic that the same media many of us are trying desperately to avoid becoming is the very same media that is defining us to the rest of the world and perhaps even ourselves. In my opinion they're doing a very poor job of it. But we're not complaining. "Hush you fool - we're getting ink!" If that's not a mindfuck and an indication that all is not well here in Eden, I don't know what is.

Words for the iPod.
The tiniest niche.
Posted audio files automatically downloaded to digital music player.
"Listen what you like when you want, not when they do." oooops, 11. Sorry!
I supposed weblogs looked pretty silly when they first started. I find them pretty similar too. It's not an amazing display of new technology, it's the idea that's important. It will of course grow and change. Good "casts" will gain listeners while people making the bad casts will get bored and stop publishing.
1. Like radio, in the way DVDs are like theatre.
2. Radio for everyone (who can afford a $400 player)
3. Like downloading a teenage Livejournal, with 1000x the bandwidth
Meh. Call it whatever you like, but ffs don't insult us by calling it radio. If it ain't live, it's someone's mix tape... unless it's the kind of radio which requires production (like drama) - which no podcasts are so far. Even Adam Curry's effort - from a so-called professional - sounds like a tape recording of a show which got cancelled from the 3am slot on an unfunded college radio station.
Subscribe to shows, have them appear on your iPod automatically.
Has anyone here seen KCRW.com's recent implementation of podcasting, or is a KCRW fan? I'd be interested to find out if anyone has suggestions for what they'd like to see work better in that area. We're going to be redesigning their site in the next few months, and are open to suggestions. One idea is to let people create wishlists for files they'd like to download, so they can browse the site without interruptions, then download all the files at once. Other thoughts?
an over-hyped term for automatically downloading audio files
syndicated audio
or, more simply:
syndicated media
(for those that don't feel like coming up with a new term (i.e., vodcasting) for every type of media that is syndicated)
