Building of Basecamp 5 on April 22 in Chicago, IL

04 Mar 2005 by Jason Fried

chicago If you missed one of our sold out Building of Basecamp workshops in Chicago, San Francisco, or Seattle, now’s your chance to attend the next Building of Basecamp workshop in Chicago on April 22nd. Attendance is limited to 40 people, and every workshop we’ve thrown has sold out in just a few weeks, so don’t miss this one. Our next workshop after this one will likely be in Copenhagen, Denmark.

We’ll be adding some new material to this workshop covering our experience building Ta-da and our next product codenamed “Honey” (which will hopefully be out by then).

We really hope to see you in Chicago on April 22nd!

Are you guys planning on doing anything closer to Montreal, maybe in Toronto or New York anytime soon? If not does anyone want to drive down with me to Chicago from Montreal? :-D

We'd love to do one in NYC, but we just haven't found the right venue yet. A workshop on the east coast may or may not happen this year. If you want to attend a workshop I suggest you attend the next one here in Chicago.

Any hotel suggestions?

Don, there are some recommendations at the bottom of the workshop page

Yeah... I'd love to go, but you see I'm planning to start a new business. And... I just don't have any money yet... cause the business isn't going. Catch-22. Hmm... maybe I can sell my Dyson...

But still I need to have a small conference like that every quarter. At $495/person, thats almost $20,000 per conference. At one a quarter... I wouldn't even have to work! Man... I need to become a speaker :) Maybe I can talk about how great the engineering of a Subaru WRX is... or maybe why everyone should buy a Apple Powerbook if they need a laptop.

But to your guys' credit, your milking every aspect of Basecamp for what its worth. Even the development process (I use Rails myself, and I think its great too!). Creative business people you all are!

Hey, I might be interested in driving from Montreal to Chicago!

Okay, Fried ... lemme break it down for you:

Which hotel is THE NICEST?

Sheesh ... midwesterners.

:)

Schenck, a man of your means should check out Hotel Burnham.

> thats almost $20,000 per conference

Hmmmm, it *does* cost money to rent a venue and pay people to get to the venue, to speak, stay in a hotel, etc..

I vote for Edinburgh, Scotland for the one after Copenhagen :-)

Any ideas on a prospective date for Copenhagen? If it's after the end of the academic year I'll be first in line :)

Shooting for early/mid June in Copenhagen.

Can you keep us posted as to availability, Jason?

So, uhh...

What the weather in Chicago like in April?

I take it, flying in from LA I'll need something warmer than a T-shirt, jeans, and some flip flops?

04 Mar 2005 | JF said...

The weather at the end of April in Chicago is unpredicable. That's the best way to characterize it. Can be very warm or unseasonably cold. Here are some averages.

okay... for those who want the "nicest" then check out the park hyatt or four seasons off michigan avenue. for those who want the coolest, check out the hotel w in the loop. (the sofitel is neat and has one of the best bars in the city, but lacks character).

How about a NSFW warning, satisfaction?

Jason, thanks for the tip! The Burham has a nightly wine reception! Nice touch.

I just wish it wasn't a week after Tax Day, or what we call "The Annual Empty-The-Savings-Account Day".

:)

sorry about that unsatisfied... would have been a good idea to give a heads up. for those wondering what the fuss was about, it was a link to a gentleman's club that is very popular in chicago (and would probably satisfy don's special needs).

if you want to know anymore, you'll have to use your imagination since the editors are out in force.

Is Los Angeles going to happen anytime soon?

06 Mar 2005 | Jean said...

Can't make it. Are you publishing transcripts of the workshop?

Thanks

Can't make it. Are you publishing transcripts of the workshop?

Nope, you have to attend to get the information.

No Philly this Spring I guess, huh? Keep us in mind for next time!

Jason, my boss has approved the seminar. I look forward to meeting you on April 22nd.

That's great Dan!

BTW: Seats are going really fast. We're nearly half sold out in just 3 days! If anyone is interested in attending, I'd sign up quickly. At this rate we'll be sold out in about 10 days.

I attended a previous conference in Chicago, and I can tell you it's worth every penny. If for nothing else, just to see people speak who are passionate about what they do, and more importantly how they do it. Of course, if your like me, be prepared for lots of conflict at your job on your return, since you'll immediately recognize how wrong your coworkers/supervisors have it.

You'll also wish a job opening would open up at 37signals. ;)

Also, don't forget to check out the Apple flagship store on Michigan Ave.

almost like you were going the wrong way down a one way street, jason? everyone says you are off... but who exactly is going the wrong direction?

08 Mar 2005 | Jason Hummel said...

but who exactly is going the wrong direction?

If turning around means going against what I believe... Then everyone else.

08 Mar 2005 | Don Schenck said...

No, Jason, you were just late, and everyone else was leaving!
