If only web sites had knobs

04 Mar 2005 by Ryan Singer

… then I could make things as beautiful as these Moog products:

MuRF MF-105, Low Pass Filter MF-101, Etherwave ( Hi-res)

Totally. What I wouldn't give to be able to step away from my computer and design an audio product like this:

Universal Audio LA-610

Moog. Hmmm ... anyone else old enough to remember "Switched On Bach"??

Classic. Walter Carlos. Now Wendy Carlos. Released an updated version in 2000.

Another great recording is "Beauty in the Beast", if you can find it. Fascinating experiments with just intonation.

Propellerheads Reason does a pretty good job of knob-based software design. Their website leaves a bit to be desired, however, as that page resides within a frame that I can't link to. Tisk Tisk. Anyway, Their knobs are neat.

Knobs in softare could be cool though that whole move your mouse up and down to move something that in real life goes clockwise/counterclockwise has to go. It still freaks me out. Though years ago maybe people will go "Yeah, back in the day, they actually turned those things around in circles."

I wonder if a click to set focus, hold-click maintain focus, then a mouse gesture or something could give a similar feel.. Hmmmm. probably not.
