Today we welcome Mark Imbriaco to the 37signals crew. Mark will serve as our first system administrator. Up until now sys admin duties have been shared by David and Jamis. Now we can have someone dedicated to the task of security, performance, set-up, and server health. This also frees up our programmers to program and not worry about infrastructure as much.
Mark lives with his family in Virginia. We’ve always preferred to hire the best and brightest no matter where they are. Limiting yourself to your geographic region leaves a lot of talented people behind.
Mark’s history includes Senior Sys Admin duties at AOL and Bank of America. He’s dealt with server clusters stacked with hundreds of machines, so we’re pretty sure he can handle our measly 15.
Mark is also a talented Ruby programmer so we look forward to having him help out there as well.
So, welcome aboard Mark! We’re very excited to have you.

Excellent! While I’m sure David didn’t mind doing some sys admin stuff, I know of that one 72 hour period a few months ago he would like to forget. And giving more time to program means more awesomeness to come!

That’s because Moveable Type is dog slow.
We’ve already built our own blogging software that will make posts/comments/etc near instant, we just have to roll it out. Maybe next week or the week after. It’s just for our own internal use, it won’t be a product we’re going to sell.

Just curious: if Mark works remotely, who does the actual work of getting the servers, connecting them up and so on (assuming that the data center is not in Virginia, but in Chicago). Reason I am asking is this is an issue we are grappling with - remote sysadmin with a rapidly expanding data center …

Tim— They recently changed. This was big news a few weeks ago. I believe they were still happy with, but were just outgrowing, Tilted, and as far as I know they still recommend Tilted.

Maybe one of your early blog entries could be about the software stack and system setup you guys use. There isn’t much information in the wild about what is being used by the “big boys”. I’ve only seen one good article (series) about it and it was in the frame of a conversion.
