It’s award season: Golden Globes, Oscars, year end best-of lists, etc. In the midst of all this judging/ranking of art or whatever, I found this quote from Antony — of Antony and the Johnsons — rather refreshing (uttered at a press conference after he won the UK’s Mercury Music Prize a few months back):
It’s kind of like a crazy contest between an orange and a spaceship and a potted plant and a spoon - which one do you like better?

It’s simple…
If you have an orange tree in a pot, pick an orange from the tree and eat the orange with a spoon, all while you are on a spaceship, you’re an actor in hollywood.

The idea is that the award is creativity…but how do you give an award for that. The elements are incomparable and there are no metrics It like giving an award for the most creative painting and an abstract art exhibt.

Well, really it’s a popularity contest of sorts. Sure I use spoons everyday, but a spaceship represents the future. And “In the future I won’t use spoons.”
And really, the analogy is flawed anyway. It’s not between an orange and a spaceship and a potted plant and a spoon. It’s between an orange, a tangerine, a pink grapefruit and a kumquat.
