Basecamp Affiliate Program launches Jason 14 Dec 2005

A few days ago we said fuck it, got simpler, and got started on a new feature we’d been talking about for a long time.

Last night we launched it.

Introducing the Basecamp Affiliate Program:

The Basecamp Affiliate Program allows you to earn credits that are applied towards your Basecamp account. These credits reduce your subscriptions fees and allow you to earn free service. It’s your reward for helping us spread the word about Basecamp. EVERYONE who has a Basecamp account is eligible!

When someone uses your affiliate code/link to sign up for a new account, you’ll receive a credit on your account after they’ve paid for their first month. You can earn up to $50 in credit for each person you sign up.

Read all about it. If you have a Basecamp account, start spreading the word and start earning today.

Congratulations on continuing to push forward with your company. I’m sure, like the rest of us, you already ignore posts like Elliott. I can’t wait to see what Campfire will bring.

“Read all about it. If you have a Basecamp account, start spreading the word and start earning today.”

You’re not actually earning, but merely not paying.

Question… I find your basecamp tool extremely useful. I’d like to adopt it in my workplace but am sure people will have issues with “sensitive company details about project management” being on servers other than our own. Is there any plan to have a stand alone install that someone could use on their own servers? I realize that having this service on your servers allows control over “subription fees”. But considering the utility your tools provide, I’m sure some companies would willing to pay some kind of fee to have the service on their own machines.

NOw do I get credit for all those that have signed up this last copuple of months. Just kidding but I will have a few soon!

JF 14 Dec 05

rsrodz, we do not have plans to make an installable version of Basecamp, sorry.

Agreed, rsrodz. As much as I’d love to use Basecamp, I’ve yet to work for any company that would allow all of their p/m data to be kept on remote servers.

Same goes for Gmail. By far my favorite email client, but I’m stuck using Outlook due to security reasons. Wow, that sentence just doesn’t even begin to sound right. ;-)

Oh, and kudos to the Signals, another nice move. Now to download the latest version of Rails…

It would be interesting if someone tried to one-up the basecamp.com site by doing their own layout, images, & copy with their affiliate link spread around the website.

Then hosted software won’t work for your company, I’m sorry.

Well spoken. It is such a shock to clients when I explain that they have a wonderful idea, but we won’t be able to work with them how they want to work with us.

It’s liberating, and frees us up to do what we want to do with clients we “pick.” Otherwise, it’s just a job.

To be honest, I think that usually has more to do with how well the idea is sold to the decision makers. I know for a fact that the IT staff of a major US newspaper uses Basecamp.

It’s all about finding the tool that best fits your needs, and then convincing the decision makers to go along.

Well put, Tony. But it also has to do with demonstrable uptime and stability: I would have a hard time making a business case for hosting our project management data on a service offered, for example, by UltraCheapNDodgyHostingCo. Basecamp has the advantage of being a reputable, solid piece of software with a large, enthusiastic user base. This makes it a much easier ‘sell’ internally, at least in my experience.

Totally

Seth 15 Dec 05

Fuck yeah, I’m gonna start signing people up right now…

James Andrews 15 Dec 05

I’m really pleased you’re doing this and I think the simplicity really works.

One suggestion however - why not give credit for people who initially sign up for a free account and then upgrade within 2 months? I for one would always sign up for a free account with something I hadn’t tried and then upgrade if I liked it. You still get the business and the referrer should really get the credit.

I’m sure these refinements can come later, but it’s something I would like to see.

Paul 15 Dec 05

Hey Tony…any chance you can drop the name of that major US Newspaper using Basecamp?

We wont tell…Honest. ;-)

We do now.
