Consumerist, Segura-Inc.com, and Aziz mixtape video 12 Dec 2005

Places to go: Nick Denton launches The Consumerist — “a shopping site, with the Gawker signature, of bitterness and frustration. Think Consumer Reports, if written by someone who’s been on hold for an hour with customer service in Bangalore.”
Carlos Segura redesigns Segura-inc.com — “After months of effort, Segura Inc, the design firm responsible for TheT26 Digital Type Foundry, 5inch and now Cartype has a new presence online.”
Comedian Aziz Ansari lost a bet with his roommate and had to walk around NYC blasting godawful music (Sixpence None the Richer, Paula Cole, that “do the conga” song, etc.) from a huge boombox (video). Fine facial reactions ensue.

If anyone has been missing Joel since he left Gizmodo, he’s the voice of The Consumerist. It’s good to have him back.

I think most people have been pretty disappointed with the Segura redesign. Not that Segura’s work isn’t first-rate, it is, but site STILL feels like it’s from 2000 and really doesn’t employ any of the sensibility of recent trends and best-practices in web development.
And I’m not talking about ajax-y web2.0 crap. I’m talking about putting a doctype in your header. And not using tables to lay out the page. And iframes - oh the horror ;)
Even the design feels outdated - tiny bitmap/pixel fonts all over the place. It’s like the folks at Segura haven’t actually browsed around any time in the last 5 years and seen that their favorite style has come and gone and feels really dated now.
Which isn’t to say they all need to look like whatever the hottest trend these days is. I’m MUCH happier that they’re not trying to look like every new site these days than I am disappointed with them, but it just feels kind of like a dinosaur of the industry that hasn’t done much to change with the times.
PS - I’m really not trying to be derogatory towards Segura. I respect them tremendously. But this site is weak and just because they’re a big name in the industry doesn’t mean they should get a free pass on it.

Yeah the Segura site is pretty weak. They clearly don’t understand the web. Print, yes, web, no way.

Totally! That was my first impression too.

Segura - multiple vertical frames? Oh, common, are we back in 1999 or what? What a shame.
