Getting Real Workshop, Oct 9, Chicago Jason 16 Aug 2006

It’s workshop time again. The last Getting Real Workshop of the year is now open for registration. Seats are $895/person. We’re capping registration at 65 people. The workshop is in Chicago. Early October is a great time of the year to visit the city. All previous workshops have sold out, so don’t miss this one.

The workshop covers similar ground as the Getting Real book, but goes into significantly greater detail about certain key points. The material is also presented in a completely different way. And of course you can’t ask a book questions but we’re available to answer any questions you may have at any time during the day.

The workshop is held at the Gleacher Center right on Michigan Avenue and the Chicago River. Seating is auditorium style, wi-fi is provided, and everyone has a nice chair and a flat table surface. The lunch is catered by Wolfgang Puck.

BONUS: Everyone who attends the workshop on October 9th will receive a signed, paperback version of the Getting Real book. We hope to see you there. Register today!

Not sure if it’s worth attending? Read this summary/review from someone who attended the last workshop.

I’d love to attend one of these, but my schedule doesn’t permit me. Yeah I know thats a bad excuse.

I love the book though. I applied most of Getting Real’s techniques for www.indiefy.com and has helped keep me focused. Kudos.

Brian Breslin 16 Aug 06

Jason,
You guys need a countdown counter of some sort to show remaining seats. and a timer too. See if you can beat the last sellout crowd’s record.

Josh 16 Aug 06

Hey guys - a bit of a typo there. I assume that you’re having Wolfgang *Punk*, and haven’t decided to bring in the man himself :).

Tom Pacyk 16 Aug 06

How’s a poor, recent college graduate supposed to afford these things? Sheesh! Maybe I’ll make it to next year’s.

“will receive a signed, paperback version of the Getting Real book”

lol - this is a joke right :o)

Why on earth would your signatures be a bonus??

MMI 16 Aug 06

Hey 37 Crew, what are the major differences, if any, between the Getting Real Workshop and the older Building of Basecamp workshop?

Thanks

JF 16 Aug 06

Warren, the bonus is the paperback book. The signature is our thank you note.

It’s entirely different in every way. I don’t believe there’s any material from the BoB workshop series in the new workshops.

Warren 16 Aug 06

“Warren, the bonus is the paperback book. The signature is our thank you note.”

Yeah ;o)

Good news!

I don’t think it’ll sell out ~quite~ as quickly as the last few, but I wouldn’t wait too long.

I attended 2 workshops ago. A real eye-opener, plenty of great information. It far exceeds the book. I couldn’t be more pleased looking back - plenty of usable, pragmatic knowledge.

Highly recommended.

Whatever happened to e-mailing the link to download the PDF version for those who attended the last Workshop?

Brandon 16 Aug 06

Wow - so you went from not knowing when it would be two days ago to its coming October 9. Amazing. :)

Now I gotta see if I can swing this.

shane 16 Aug 06

Does this mean that print copies of the book are available?

Spike 16 Aug 06

For $895 :-)

ML 16 Aug 06

Does this mean that print copies of the book are available?

Not yet but stay tuned.

Greg 16 Aug 06

I hope you could make a video version, so that we, who can’t come, can watch it.

I’ll buy it, if you have it

Des Traynor 16 Aug 06

Eh, yeah. Great idea Greg.

Seriously, there are many many svn fans around the world (as I am sure feedburner shows you). Maybe record each talk, and sell them for a $price each , or the whole lot for $PRICE

(I don’t like telling people how much to charge).

Basically, I am in Ireland, I’ll never go to a GetReal Workshop, cause they’re in USA. But I’d pay to see some of the stuff.

Something to think about for you guys anyways, (if you hadn’t done so already)

We filmed the last workshop. We don’t know what we’ll do with the footage, but we’re editing it now to see what it ends up looking like. Depending on how it comes out we may or may not end up selling it in one form or another, but it’s at the bottom of our “stuff-to-focus-on-now” list.

FredS 16 Aug 06

Do you cover sales at all?

JF 16 Aug 06

Do you cover sales at all?

We don’t have salespeople or a sales team so we don’t cover sales in the traditional sense, but we cover elements of selling and encouraging upgrades, etc.

FredS 16 Aug 06

I guess maybe marketing and getting an audience is what I meant. By encouraging upgrades, do you mean switching products?

JF 16 Aug 06

By encouraging upgrades I mean moving people from free plans to paying plans of an existing product, or cross-selling and integrating other products.

But don’t expect a textbook lesson — it’s really quite simple. Things are complicated if you make them complicated. We don’t.

JF 17 Aug 06

Im not sure how much of this is standard rails stuff, and how much is imitation though

Rails has nothing to do with visual design. These designs are rip offs. We’ve contacted some of these folks and asked them to make changes. Most have done the right thing and made the appropriate changes.

Blake 17 Aug 06

What time are you guys starting the day of the event? I want to know if I need to fly up the day before, or if I can get there the morning of in time. Blake

JF 17 Aug 06

Starts at 9, but you should be there at 8:30.

Ward 17 Aug 06

Are there any special hotel rates or even blocks of rooms for Sunday night?

If not, where do you recommend staying?

Jamis 17 Aug 06

The following few hotels are within walking distance or a short cab ride. *Any* hotel in the downtown area will work just fine.

Sofitel Chicago Water Tower
20 East Chestnut Street
Chicago, IL 60611
(312) 324-4000

Claridge Hotel Chicago
1244 N Dearborn Street
Chicago, IL 60610
(800) 245-1258

Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel
163 E. Walton Place
Chicago, IL 60611
(312) 751-8100

Sherrod DeGrippo 17 Aug 06

I’m going to see Anthony Robbins in Atlanta around that same time. His price is also $895, but his seminar is 4 full days and includes firewalking/hot coals. Sorry, I’d rather learn to control people’s minds and drain the wallets of millions.

Ward 17 Aug 06

Jamis - Thank you.

Any update on how many slots are left? Trying to get company approval to pay for this…

JF 17 Aug 06

We’ve sold about 25 seats so far.

SH 17 Aug 06

OMG PLEASE DO WALKING ON COALS.

BradM 17 Aug 06

I would really love to go! Time and budget are just not in the cards right now. It’s a catch22, as I see it being so much worth going to the session to help with time and money, but I cannot make it because I lack the two right now.
I’m all for the video download. I sure hope things work out with the editing. It would be truely an amazing offer. (Give it away free to attendees, as a reference). Plus I think it would be cool to go out with a few of you for a few micro brews afterwards.

Looks like someone has already taken that course! LOL.

jeff 17 Aug 06

October 9th is my birthday! You could give me a free seat at the workshop for a present if you want.

BradM 18 Aug 06

Question - In your presentation, do you refer to how you mange subscriptions, accounting for these subscriptions? I assume you wrote an in-house tool to manage subscriptions?

We don’t discuss anything technical in the workshop. You are free to ask questions about things we don’t cover, and if we can answer them we will, but the workshop is definitely not a technical how-to.

Ben 18 Aug 06

Hi there! I’m interested to come to your conference, via Sydney Australia and bring two of our employees from the US.

Always refreshing to read some of 37signal’s material. Your take of biz reminds me of two Swedish professors that wrote “Funky Business” - A brilliant read too.

Oh, btw, our Basecamp is down, “The account you were looking for doesn’t exist”, but erm, it sure does.

I guess you really do need to fill that sysadmin job ASAP ;-)

JF 19 Aug 06

Ben, we’d love to have you. A few people have made the trip from Austrailia to attend previous workshops.

Hmm, Basecamp didn’t have any issues on or around Aug 18. You may want to check your connection on your end and/or clear your browser cache.
