KFC Famous Bowls: Well, at least it’s white meat chicken Jason 13 Jun 2006

I love the marketing spin around the new KFC Famous Bowls. Creamy mashed potatoes, homestyle gravy, 3-cheese blend, and deep-fried crispy white meat chicken. Phew, that was almost enough to kill a man.

More like diharrhea bowls.

Mike Doan 13 Jun 06

I had one, there’s actually pretty good. Its like taking Thanksgiving dinner and mixing it all up. Yum.

TinyBowlsOfFood 13 Jun 06

It’s like a heart-attack in a bowl!

Jim 13 Jun 06

These comments are ridiculous. The point is not that its racist (white vs dark), the point is that the white meat is ‘healthier’, which doesn’t matter in the end, given all the other crap.

Use your head for more than a hat rack.

Sara in Austin 13 Jun 06

690 calories… wonder what it would be with dark meat? 700 calories?

Noah 13 Jun 06

I’ve gotten food poisoning 3 times from KFC and once it nearly killed me. I don’t eat there anymore.

Judson Dunn 13 Jun 06

I like that is says “feel good about lunch” too, I’m not sure exactly why you should feel good about that…

Noah 13 Jun 06

I’m not sure anyone really is going to think this thing is better for having white meat. Many people just like it better.

Dave 13 Jun 06

They are just clarifying. Some people specifically ask for white meat, not dark meat, just like in a turkey. This is not a white meat vs. red meat thing.

Tony 13 Jun 06

@Noah: 3 times? Are you some sort of idiot? I think nature was trying to kill you so you wouldn’t reproduce. Tell me, would you touch a live wire twice more if the first attempt shocked the shit out of you? Same applies here. Food poisoning is nasty. Once, you didn’t know better. Twice, maybe the first time was a fluke. But three times? Just stay way, man.

Anonymous Coward 13 Jun 06

You’ve forgot the SWEET CORN!

Benjy 13 Jun 06

I want to know what makes them Famous. Because KFC says they are? It’s not like it’s some product that’s been around for decades. Shouldn’t the public decide on whether they deserve to be famous or not?

Dan Boland 13 Jun 06

Benjy: Because “famous” sounds a lot better than “craptastic.” ;)

Phil 13 Jun 06

Troll cap or not, i gotta agree with Tony. I got some chicken strips from Popeyes once that was still clucking it was so raw. I didn’t even get sick, and theres no way i’d go there again…what were you thinking Noah?

lisa 13 Jun 06

I’m just glad it’s served all mixed up in an easy-to-eat bowl. It solves that challenging problem of eating different items from various plates.

Tom 13 Jun 06

The part that confuses me the most is this: “Introducing KFC’s Famous Bowls!”

If they’re so famous, why do I need to be introduced?

The sidebar also refers to them as “new.” If they’re new, when did they get famous?

SP 13 Jun 06

There’s no way I’m eatin’ one of those until they come up with a way for me to drink it thru a straw.

Mmmm…. chicken-tater smoothie…..

beto 13 Jun 06

Im not sure anyone really is going to think this thing is better for having white meat.

Well, that’s Marketing 101 for you.

I don’t know if they use it in the U.S, but local KFC’s here have a kid’s mascot that happens to be…. A CHICKEN! Every time I see it I can’t help imagining the little fella saying “Eat me! Eat me! Me taste finger-lickin’ goody!”

Creepy.

Chris Busse 13 Jun 06

“It’s a trifle. It’s got all of these layers. First, there is a layer of lady fingers. Then, a layer of jam. Then, custard — which I made from scratch! Then cranberries, more lady fingers, then beef sauteed with peas and onions, more custard, and then bananas, and then I just put some whipped cream on top.”

/’been watching too many episodes of Friends w/ my wife.

Hmph. This is one of the oddest posts and set of comments I’ve ever seen.

nate 13 Jun 06

I’m lobbying for the removal of Tony’s troll cap. That was the first good laugh I’ve had in several weeks.

Robb Irrgang 13 Jun 06

makes you wonder how something can be famous…upon _introduction_.

jason 13 Jun 06

Glad to see some noise finally to balance all the signal we’ve been getting…

Josh Byers 13 Jun 06

mmmmm, I’m lovin’ it…

New=Having been made or come into being only a short time ago; recent

Famous=Well or widely known (national ad campaign would probably qualify.)

I would say the they are *new* and *famous*

Baeck 13 Jun 06

mmmmm, Im lovin it

I think you misunderstood: these bowls are from KFC, not McDonald’s. ;-)

Jay Reding 13 Jun 06

That has to be one of the most disgusting food products ever foisted upon the American consumer in decades. This is the sort of thing that the French point at and use to call us “savages”.

Famous? For what? Causing explosive diarrhea? Having more preservatives stuffed in it than the mummy of Ramses the Great?

Given the state of “innovation” in the American food industry, I’m surprised they don’t fry it in lard and dip in in chocolate than smother it in nacho cheese. Alternately they can blend it into a nice thick plaque and inject it directly into one’s arteries.

The smartest thing I ever did was switch to a diet that has drastically less crap in it. Very little to no high-fructose corn syrup, more fresh vegetables, and as little processed food as I can get away with. The difference in health is amazing.

It’s a little like Getting Real in software developments (I couldn’t resist adding a little signal to the rant). When you get rid of all the processed crap, the extraneous sugars and fats, and all the other junk that’s in our food supply, you end up having a better overall experience. One of these bowls is just a mockery of a real meal, and as ultimately unfulfilling as one would suspect. I think people in this country would eat less if they ate foods with more substance to them.

Clint Pidlubny 13 Jun 06

So are we to assume from your post “Phew, that was almost enough to kill a man”, that you actually ate it? The marketing spin isn’t that good.

Drew Pickard 13 Jun 06

Personally, I enjoy all of the listed foods together (minus gravy - yechh)

But … I’m not so sure I’d want it from KFC.

I prefer white meat, too. Sorry. =(

kneeko 13 Jun 06

I had to read this post 3 times to understand it’s reason for being. It seems that others were similarly flustered. Let me enlighten:

The KFC bowl *would have been* fatal were it not for the fact that the chicken is white meat — had it been the jucier, more flavorful dark variety, the additional fat content would have pushed the total meal toxicity past sustainable levels.

Irony, yes? Am I right?

John Beales 13 Jun 06

Looks Tasty! Not healthy but hey, if you’re eating at KFC health isn’t exactly the first thing on your mind anyway.

Of course, processed cheese, probably instant mashed potatoes, corn from a can…… I’ll have to try it, if they bring it to Canada, to see if it’s really tasty.

Don Wilson 13 Jun 06

Let this be a lesson to you.

Design your web app around the white meat.

Geoff 13 Jun 06

i kept seeing that ad while sick with a NASTY stomach flu…ugh, made me sicker. i found out the bowl was designed by a 350 lb nazi. papa john’s Fajita Pizza was no prize either.

…actually, that does sound kinda good.

indi 13 Jun 06

After reading the comments and not having looked at the ad, I thought a lot of you were being a bit over the top. Then I looked at the ad. Ugh. I could actually feel my stomach lining cringe.

Piffle Master 13 Jun 06

U S A! U S A!.. No wonder you’re having serious problems with the national health.

Alan Jacobs 13 Jun 06

Hey, is Jay Reding right? If I eat one of those things, will a Frenchman point at me and call me a savage? ‘Cause that sounds cool.

beto 13 Jun 06

@Alan Jacobs: They will most likely call you a “sauvage”

Sounds rather classy, coming to think of it.

sham 13 Jun 06

It’s great to figure out what to do with all the leftovers you would normally have to throw away. Somehow, KFC’s version isn’t as appetizing as oreo cookie ice cream!

Sauvages Unite!

Eric 13 Jun 06

You guys hungry today? What’s with all the posts about food? Wonder if these KFC bowls have high fructrose corn syrup?

FredS 13 Jun 06

This ain’t you Daddy’s chicken.

AnnF 14 Jun 06

Can you get this … mixture, entree, whatever … family style, in a bucket?

Eric M 14 Jun 06

reading that description, i can’t decide if i should puke in my mouth or go out and buy one right now. sounds deliciously awful.

Stephen 14 Jun 06

Are you sure they don’t just mean it’s made from breast (the white meat) and not from wings or legs (the dark meat)?I’m not but that may be what they’re trying to say.

I’d sure be confused if there was ay red meat in my “chicken”.

Dan Grossman 14 Jun 06

I really don’t see the point of this post. They write white meat because people like it better than the processed dark meat fast food places used to make chicken nuggets from.

Hammer and Tongs 14 Jun 06

“I really dont see the point of this post.”

Yeah, I gave up looking for points to these things a long time ago. Basically by not providing a point, its more like a rorschach. You can derive your own meaning.

Emmm, let me see….

White meat means less distractions. Less is more. More is more or less, less. Less Chicken, is a competitive advantage. Less food you would want to eat. Less time spent eating, and hence less time spent on the toilet with unfortunate bouts of diarrhea.

It’s all about constraints you see.

Territan 14 Jun 06

C’mon. Seriously. Who didn’t used to do this with their meatloaf and mashed potatoes as a kid?

The chicken and potatoes by themselves wouldn’t be so bad. However, the gravy adds fat, the cheese adds fat, and the deep-frying adds fat. Emphasizing the white meat chicken is selling the customer a pig-in-a-poke. And it’s not even a normal poke, it’s a transparent poke made of bacon.

…I can’t help thinking that somewhere above, my analogy went off the rails and I’m not exactly sure where.

Tim, I doubt 37s minds that their screenshots don’t show up on the Flickr.com home page and search. Flickr isn’t deleting accounts or pictures, they’re just not showing them in public areas.

Same thing happens to pornographic images.

“All the KFC favorites you know and love served in a convenient easy-to-eat bowl!”

What? No biscuits?

Charles Martin 14 Jun 06

Jeez, folks, this is just a good old canadian poutine with mashed potatoes instead of french fries.

Clark 14 Jun 06

Why can’t people just cook at home? What’s so difficult about cooking some potatoes, adding some fresh or frozen corn, and some fresh chicken? People that lazy?

Josh 14 Jun 06

That’s almost as American as the Turducken

Babba Choolio 14 Jun 06

Dawg 15 Jun 06

It just shows how lazy the American population is. Next thing, they’ll just throw all the food in a trough, we can pay a fee, and eat like the pigs we are becoming.

Jeff Martin 15 Jun 06

Are you sure they dont just mean its made from breast (the white meat) and not from wings or legs (the dark meat)

Wings are white meat. Legs and thighs and…other parts are dark.

Dirk 15 Jun 06

I had one of these famous bowls…it was amazing, then about 12 hours later, i had another great bowl….in my bathroom. It looks and tastes the same on the way in as it does on the way out.

Josh 15 Jun 06

The Potato Bowl is an amazing idea! I love these things, they are not only cheap, increadibly filling (because there is so much food) and they’re increadibly tasty. The thing that bothers me so much about these meals is when people complain about how terrible they are for you. Eating nothing but fruit and milk would be bad for you if you never moved and sat around in the same chair all day everyday. If you’re going to eat one of these things, just work it off, fucking walk around the block, play a competitive game, don’t drive the six blocks to KFC just to save yourself that valuable 20 minutes that seem so important. If you really think it’s that bad for you, and you don’t plan on using all the calories you ingest, then don’t eat it and shut up.

Alora 05 Jul 06

Just order the mashed potato bowl with the grilled chicken instead of the fried chicken idiots! And tell them to hold the cheese. It will cut the calories & fat in half. My god people….use your heads. It’s not that hard, really! KFC’s mashed potatoes are low fat (check their nutrition calculator), and their gravy is almost fat free (check that too if you must). I can’t believe all these ignorant, I have no idea what I’m saying type comments on here.

Bob 06 Jul 06

grow up people. if u don’t like it don’t buy it

Harry Balzac 08 Jul 06

They are good, and very healthy too. Looking at the nutritional numbers, it would be OK for most people to eat up to three of these for lunch and as many as four for dinner on a daily basis.

Its about time we got some healthy fast good!

Yay KFC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

amanda 11 Jul 06

hey I actually got up the nerve to try one of these for my self. I ordered it without the cheese. It was pretty good I did not like the corn. I ordered a biscuit and cole slaw and had a pretty good meal. No upset stomach or anything. I liked it. It might not be healthy and I would not want one every day but it was a good change up.

shaft 12 Jul 06

i love kfc famous bowls

Jessica 13 Jul 06

Famous means it’s made by the famous things on the kfc menu, people.

Laura E. Archuleta 17 Jul 06

You this is why we love the internet. People get into these heated discussions about chicken refferences to racism, how horrible it is, “heart-attack” in a bowl, amount of calories with white/dark meat, or how much they loved it. I am not saying that it was any of these, but it was worth it in the end. I didnt get sick or any sort of allergic reaction, I didnt completely enduldge in the bowl either. Then again if you didnt like it, thats just your opinion, so dont get upset when someone else said they loved it. Just depends on who you are and what you like. Turn things like this into a heated discussion over food, sounds like some extremely obese person saying they are starving!

Shawn 02 Sep 06

We all know the fast food restaurants are going to kill us…I don’t think they put “white meat” for it to sound healtheir, just ot make it sound yummier. Dark meat is gross.

what is in a name? 24 Sep 06

i think to support ani-racism, kfc should put a perfect balance of white and dark meat. living in harmony, together in the famous bowl

These things aren’t ALL that bad. If there wasn’t meat in it I might eat it. We shouldn’t be focusing on places like KFC when places like McDonald’s are still selling their food to unsuspecting people. Everyone knows that the symbol of all that is evil is Ronald McDonald, not Colonel Sanders.
