One thing I am tiring of quickly in “Web 2.0” (I hate this term) design is the whole soft, pastel pallette that everyone seems to use (and abuse). It’s like hanging out in a maternity ward. As for me, I can’t wait until the web grows up some more and gets back to bold, powerful colors that I appreciate.

I agree. Most of them are beautiful and eye-popping for sure, but I always end up yelling at my screen for the animation to stop. That and the incessant need to resize my browser window. Thaaaaaanks.

Mike, I have to desagree, I do not think www.bopia.com looks that much like veerle’s blog, maybe the dark colors but tons of reboot sites are using dark background. It’s in.

The font is a bit small, but you can always receize it to your liking.

Veerle’s website reminds me of Ordered List. That was the first website that led me into learning about web standards and stop using tables forever (next to ALA and CSS Zen Garden).

Gamespot’s E3 website has a really funky “monster” cartoon theme that has great colour management, typography management and information flow (despite being full to the brim, but you can’t really expect anything else from such a type of website). It uses CSS effectively and minimal markup and feels really tight and clean, and also has hardly any overbearing advertisements.

Paul — they’re very similar, but not the same. Even if they were the same, 1) that’s the nature of stock images, and 2) at least Eric’s site did something interesting with the image.

I’m also pretty impressed with the Veerle site. Quite a lot of stuff, and yet it doesn’t feel overwhelming — feels more like the design invites you to stroll around the site.
