The Million Dollar Home Page psychology and marketing experiment 20 Oct 2005

87 comments Latest by Dave

What fascinates me most about the Million Dollar Home Page, besides the obvious genius behind it, is that it’s a deep look into psychology, marketing, and constraints: money, color, placement, promotion, proximity, message, fonts, risk, gut, pictures vs. words, etc. You could study this for a day and learn more than you could in an entire college marketing class.

UPDATE: The creativity never ends… Now people are subletting their pixels. Pixellords!

I can’t believe he’s sold over 430K worth of pixels. 430K!!!!! That’s a (nice) house in Wisconsin!!!!

It shows you the importance of being “first” in some cases. I think if someone else tries this idea it won’t work. The second million dollar homepage - not so much.

Perhaps someone should undercut him and sell pixels for 50 cents. Would that be enough or does first mover and best inventory win in this situation? Is he the eBay of pixels sales?

James 20 Oct 05

I love it. Genius. Absolute genius.

James 20 Oct 05

And there’s room to innovate in this new space, still. Especially on the business model side. You’d have an uphill battle on your hands not being the first, but if you came up with a new angle to play, it could work.

BillK 20 Oct 05

Firefox with Adblock just shows a blank page.
So even more marketing ad money goes down the drain.

And he’s ontrack to become a millionaire within a year.

Nice one!

Jamie 20 Oct 05

I had a hard time trying to find the Basecamp ad though. :P

benny 20 Oct 05

Every time I see that, I’m reminded of some sort of online Las Vegas.

Now I have to go through with my plans! I’ve been sitting on an idea for a week or so now, and I think it’s a good one. It’s sort of a spin on the idea of ads for ads’ sake, but more of a competition than milliondollarhomepage. Maybe I’ll finish it up this weekend…

Think 37s would blog me, too, if it’s done in Rails? ;-)

Ed 20 Oct 05

Didn’t this guy try to do the same thing with a Times Square billboard?

Darrel 20 Oct 05

This has been a brilliant project, but I’m not sure if I’m reading as much into it as Ed is.

it’s a page full of ads. it’s there because it’s a novel idea with lots of word-of-mouth.

And I think that 20centpixel page pretty much confirms that ‘first to market’ with this type of idea is the only one that really succeeds, not that the 20centpixel site has any overhead, so I suppose ANY add is a success.

Ed 20 Oct 05

I had the wrong guy. This one is selling 30 second spots on Times Square. http://www.adrants.com/2005/10/forehead-guy-takes-over-times-square.php

Dave Simon 20 Oct 05

Very good idea, and it seems to be working. I looked at a bunch of the ads but didn’t click on them. He’s still making money though.

He could have made more money, though, if he would have sold them in tiers, where the first 500,000 cost $1/pixel, but as the space gets limited, the price goes up.

Peter Cooper 20 Oct 05

He might be able to buy a tiny apartment in his native UK if he’s lucky.. :) Of course, 40% of that will go in taxes first.

Darrel 20 Oct 05

This is interesting:

Check out the large rentpixelads.com logo in the lower left of the page. It belongs to this site:

http://www.rentpixelads.com/

which bought $10000 worth of pixels on the MDHP and is now subletting them.

beth 20 Oct 05

Of course GoldenPalace.com bought a big chunk of space, of course. After all, they’re the people that bought the half-eaten grilled cheese sandwich with the face of the virgin mary off ebay.

James Billot 20 Oct 05

I was getting a good 600-800 unique visits a day from my 10x10 pixel ad, even though it was ‘below the fold’ for many viewers. I chose a (then) desolate area to stand out a bit.

Then those rentpixelads guys set up their $10,000 beast right next to little old me (I’m the blue infinity symbol to their left, below the boobs ;) and I’m lucky to get 40-50 visits these days.

I think this is a definite first-mover/novelty/media-interest/only-works-once kind of deal. But the number of people jumping on the bandwagon is amazing - I get 1 or 2 emails a day, just via my ad, from people setting up their own variation.

I even got one from a kid in New Zealand who had a 400Kb banner that was over 3000px wide on the top of his site, but that he had ‘shrunk-to-fit’ by using a width attribute on the image. I saved it, optimised it, and emailed it back to him (all 12Kb of it) - which he seemed to be quite pleased about.

Many people don’t seem to realise that Alex Tew’s success isn’t just down to the idea and being first. He needed a story behind it (the plucky teenager worried about debt at university) to get the sympathetic press coverage that just about kick-started enough traffic for the whole thing to build momentum, while also making people feel comfortable about handing over money.

Robert Gremillion 20 Oct 05

The part I love is how fast he was able to go from idea to implementation to $450,000. I think it has been less than 2 months.

I don’t think he’s going to be able to sell all 1,000,000 pixels. Eventually I think he will have to cut the price in half in order to sell out the bottom half of the grid.

I would really like to know the level of hits these people are getting. How many hits would I get from a $100 square?

BTW, they already have knock off scripts for sell.

PJ Hyett 20 Oct 05

“You could study this for a day and learn more than you could in an entire college marketing class.”

Not really, but it’s an interesting experiment nevertheless. The novelty of it was cool when you could actually see individual ads on the page, now it’s quite a cluster fuck. I don’t know who would be willing to pay for space on it now. Good for him for making that much money off of something so ridiculous, though.

Tom 20 Oct 05

I saw this site a couple of days after it launched, I thought it was a good idea but thought he would probably only sell a few percent of the blocks.

After it started to get press coverage I finally bought a 10*10 block on there when the total was around $20,000 (about a month ago). I thought it had already reached it’s peak back then and he would be lucky to sell 10% of the squares. Amazingly it just seems to have grown and grown since then. I got 3300 clicks in September and 500 this month.

As Matt mentioned above the story was key to his success, student debt is a big concern for students in the uk and has been in the news the last few years.

Dharmesh Shah 20 Oct 05

I’m hoping/guessing that there are only certain type of websites that would benefit from “random” traffic.

I’m somewhat skeptical that many businesses can monetize the random traffic that would be generated from ads on these types of sites.

But, maybe I’m missing something…

A Teen. 21 Oct 05

Cyber Surfing is a growing concept amongst teens…people do get bored easily. Earlier on, cyber surfing was fueled with all those pay-to-click and pay-to-surf programs; it introduced people to new websites and concepts. Now most teens resort to bored.com or youthink.com or of that like….

This is just a website they’d use to get to another interesting website…

Chris Cosby 21 Oct 05

Add one more to the growing list.

I guess its nice that they offer prizes though. A bit of a twist on an overdone idea.

The penny a pixel have it backwards. The next big idea is to charge MORE so word of mouth still finds it interesting

Mike D. 24 Oct 05

I think the most startling thing about this conversation is that someone actually took the time to point out that “Firefox with AdBlock just shows a blank page”. BillK, seriously… do you think your browser setup is anywhere *close* to indicative of what the general public visits that site with? What are we talking here, 1% of the world maybe with your setup?

Furthermore, even people who block ads are likely to “unblock” them when visiting that site because they are there specifically to see what the fuss is all about.

Monica 24 Oct 05

I found this one http://www.3xarchive.com
It’s something new to me because this guy is giving avaw part of his money to his advertisers. It’s something that I haven’t seen on other buy pixels sites.

Chris Hiester 26 Oct 05

Here’s my idea: an “$8,010,059,396,713.96 home page” to pay off the current national debt of the United States. Did you know you can send money to the US Government to pay off the debt (yeah, yeah, I know, you can also hit yourself in the kneecap with a ball-pene hammer…)? So here’s the pitch:

Buy a 100 x 100 pixel for a *mere* $8 billion or *only* $80 million per pixel. OK, nobody will buy it—and that shows you how completely out of control the debt is.

You could also pick other themes like paying for the Iraq war, balancing the deficit, etc.

Creighton Schlebach 27 Oct 05

I’ve bought $400 worth of pixels on MDH - the big red square with the 100 in it. I got over 300 unique impressions in the first 24h - which I think is pretty ok for a start-up.

What’s interesting to me is that over half my traffic comes from UK based visitors, I guess that’s because most of the press coverage there. It will be interesting to see if that changes while Alex tours the US. The US market is massive in comparison to the UK, and I don’t think Alex will have a problem selling the other half a million.

Another thing to keep in mind is the possibility of a fly-on-the-wall type documentary of Alex’s trip to the US, which will be screened at some time in the future. This will draw even more interest.

I think that for small companies trying to get their names known, this is an excellent opportunity.
For example, how many of you had ever heard of Sponge or Tom Corven before visiting the MDH? Even my small ad. 10X10 block for my invention Agitor has received enough traffic to push it to the top of Google’s search results - it was on the 2nd page before.

Enough rambling - please visit www.100milliondollarhomepage.com for a more “undiluted” version of the original. Cheers.

Salma 28 Oct 05

www.managing-creativity.com is selling $1 pixels on a monthly recurring basis.

I think this is an incremental innovation on Alex “lucky-bastard” Tew’s idea.

It advances the online advertising model. Soon big banners ads may become more expensive based on the pixel cost structure.

marc 29 Oct 05

Here is a great site! The http://www.milliondollarpixellottery.com
where you buy a block for $150 (i.e.$50 more than Alex T’s but it give you the chance to win $1.000.000 with your PayPal Transaction Receipt Number! Great Idea! I think! For $50 you have a 1 to 100.000 chance or more depending how may you buy to win the Million a much better chance than any other lottery i have come across!

Hey everyone i think that this idea of he one million dollar home page can not be repeated, the idea is done and used up. The only possible way it might work again is if there is a good angle! I think i have it!

On Thursday i am releasing my new web-site www.thegaymilliondollarhomepage.com which is a site designated to gay and lesbian web-sites bringing them together and giving then a space where they will onyl find gay and lesbian web-sites, not just this but 50 cents of every $1 i earn is going straight to AIDS research!

So i get to donate money to charity and after that once i have split it with my business partner and paid my costs and upkeep of the web-site for the next 3 years, i hope to be able to send myself through colege, im 18!

Another twist on the million dollar page theme. Lease pixels, and links for various time periods.

I found this funny pay-per-pixel site:
http://www.pixelssuck.com

“Pixels suck, that’s why I’m disposing of them on eBay”
is what its owner declare.

I think this way he gives the chance to buy a pretty big space on his site for a few pocket money.

I’ve been studying, using online marketing and I am amazed at the success of this guy. Incredible word of mouth advertisement he has got through building “media attractive” story.

It surely shows that you don’t need to build a site, you don’t also need to do SEO.. or so.. and still you can make $ on Internet.

We have set up Rail Pixels www.railpixels.com to be The Million Visitor Homepage, the worlds first pixel marketing site for the rail industry.
10% of profits will be donated to The Railway Children, the charity helping runaway and abandoned children who live in and around the world’s railway stations. Alex Tews The Million Dollar Homepage is our inspiration. His concept could be the basis for a re-think of web marketing that challenges costly banner ads, boring links pages & antiquated webrings.

Anyhow, great comments all, and…if you want to buy some pixels, want to target yourself in latin america, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Jobless Boy Launches A Website To Sell 10,000 Jeans On The Internet!

USA jobless boy has set his sights on earning himself a million dollars after thinking of a simple idea of selling brands new and used jeans on his homepage MoneyOrBox.com
He had been thinking of ideas on how to make a little extra money for himself but some of his ideas either never worked out or were just far too ambitious.
So far there are 28 jeans sold on the homepage which has netted him just $1300 but as visitors grow and more people hear about the site, no doubt more jeans will be added and he will progress towards his target of 10,000 jeans on his homepage and one million dollars in the bank.

FORMULA FOR PRIME NUMBERS!
Some numbers have the special property that they cannot be expressed as the product of two smaller numbers, e.g., 2, 3, 5, 7, etc. Such numbers are called prime numbers, and they play an important role, both in pure mathematics and its applications. The distribution of such prime numbers among all natural numbers does not follow any regular pattern. A proof that it is true for every interesting solution would shed light on many of the mysteries surrounding the distribution of prime numbers.
Since the late 1960s, with the advent of computers, there has been a shift of focus from finding a mathematical formula to devise an algorithm that can test for primality of a given number. Testing of primality thus became an important problem in theoretical computer science. If an algorithmic solution to the problem posed is found, then an executable computer program can be written.

I believe that Alex’s site still generates some indirect value for advertisers at least by improving their visibility in search engines. It has a PageRank of 7 and many still continue to add links to it (by the way, this article has just added one link). So, getting the link from website with such a high PageRank for as low as 1$ it is clearly a reasonable investment.
Good luck to all the copycats :)

Two Spanish students opened La Pagina del Millon, a web page through which they hope to pay their university degree expenses.

Two Spanish students from Rovira i Virgili University, Isaac Paton and Florencia Manette, opened the 15th of March La Pagina del Millon, a web page through which they hope to pay their university degree expenses.

After Alex Tews success with Themilliondollarhomepage, only a few months ago, now two young Spanish students try to do the same with www.lapaginadelmillon.es.

The page is structured with 10.000 squares of 100 pixels each, at the rate of 1 euro per pixel. People interested in appearing in the page buy the pixels to insert the image which links to their own web pages. This is a way to increase the number of visitors; in the page is showed the comments from the buyers satisfaction about the great number of visitors they have with only 100 pixels they bought in La Pagina del Millon.

One of the differences from the English project is that this one is addressed to the Spanish Community.

After three months experience, the young university students have collected 20.000 euros, they have been in radio and TV interviews, in pieces of news in the Spanish news papers and also in pieces of news on line.

Other differences from other similar projects are that www.lapaginadelmillon.es offers a serious service and it is shown on the first places in internet search (Google, MSN).

In order to bring out the project in a legal and serious way, the two young university students have established a firm. This implies a supervision of all the terms provided by lawyers. Moreover, an important Spanish Bank gives support to guarantee the safety and privacy to pay on line.

It can be summarized that www.lapaginadelmillon.es is a web page where everybody can take advantages of its possibilities: the students get money to pay their university studies, and the buyers increase their popularity and a great deal of visitors to read their advertisements and go to their own web pages.
