The evolution of an icon. That must be a tough job. More details.

UPDATE: Some amazing angles. And here’s a look at Audi’s design process.

I just bought a PodBrix t-shirt. I should’ve saved my money and gotten’ myself this sweet ride instead.

Re: Audi TT.

Who cares?

Michael 06 Apr 06

Look! They’re doing blueprints, sketches, functionnals specs and all this stuff!

How can they deliver something so great with such a formal process???

;)

PS: Just kidding. (In case someone take it seriously)

Jeff L 06 Apr 06

Jason,

I know you all about everything Audi - but they took something unique and made it look like a Z car.

Carl 06 Apr 06

It looks like a Nissan Z ripoff.

I like the old TT much better.

Matt 06 Apr 06

I like it a lot, and their new R8, which seems to have similar styling:

http://www.fourtitude.com/news/publish/Audi_News/article_2106.shtml

Martin 06 Apr 06

It looks great. A blending of the old TT with Audi’s new design features (e.g., the front grille).

Interesting flat-bottom steering wheel, however… Is that going to be comfortable?

JF 06 Apr 06

Oh, the R8 is FUCKING MINE. I mean, if I had the money to blow, but DAMN do I want an R8.

Joe 06 Apr 06

Looks like the 37s folks are making lots of money and are developing rich tastes.

Bosco Jones - I don’t care either. Buying an expensive sports car is really low on my priorities list.

pwb 06 Apr 06

The rear looks like a Porsche. Still a little heavy in the front, tho, more BMWish. I don’t really care for the new Audi grills. The new A4s are a step back.

huh? looking at cars does not have anything to do with money, it has to do with the appreciation of design.

Other Joe 06 Apr 06

> Buying an expensive sports car is really low on my priorities list.

Expensive sports cars become affordable after a few years. You can get a used TT for under 10k.

RJB 06 Apr 06

What is it about German cars that make them so appealing? I am obsessed with my GTI, but it, like every other German car I have owned, is the most unreliable frustration ever.

Even after losing 5th gear and any power capabilities on the right side of the vehicle, I hold on to it like my first-born child.

Saul Weiner 06 Apr 06

Is it me or is this a Mercedes C-Class Coupe/Nissan Z-Class mashup?

Still, it’s nice to see Audi finally innovate under the Volkswagen brand.

Dave 06 Apr 06

“Interesting flat-bottom steering wheel, however Is that going to be comfortable?”

More comfortable in a very small car than having the bottom of the wheel brushing against your thighs. I don’t know about the TT, but a lot of Miata drivers install “D-cut” wheels for just that reason (I considered it myself, but decided I didn’t really need it). It gives you more laproom except when you’re turning the wheel sharply, at which point you’re too focused on the curve to care much about brushing your legs.

Jeff Croft 06 Apr 06

I think this is a really nice looking car and i’d sure like to drive one, but I do kind of agree that it loses a bit of it’s uniqueness in this itteration. Still, pretty damn sweet.

Jared White 06 Apr 06

Hmm, at first glance it doesn’t impress me. I liked the old Audi TT design better. Smoother and more elegant. Personally, I’m impressed by the all-new Volvo C70. It’s a hard-top convertible now and looks pretty classy. Some might still call it bland but it appeals to my taste for clean lines.

Rob Sanheim 06 Apr 06

So how does a baby seat fit in the back of that thing?

street 06 Apr 06

Wow, it almost looks as good as a porsche. Too bad it probably won’t drive like one. I’m sure it will keep Audi’s signature numb steering.

arturo 06 Apr 06

The R8 looks like they resurrected the old Audi Spyder.

joe 06 Apr 06

> So how does a baby seat fit in the back of that thing?

That’s not part of “good design!”

arturo 06 Apr 06

The R8 looks like they resurrected the old Audi Spyder.

Dave Ferrick 06 Apr 06

The dash still looks like the Mustang sans the angle

Yawn. I’d much, much rather have a real sports car.

Jemaleddin 06 Apr 06

A few problems:

A) You’ll never see a press photo with a US-size front plate. Why? Because the new Audis and VWs with that god-awful grill look ridiculous with one.

B) As pretty and simplistic as the design of Audis is, it’s a shame that they can’t make a car that’s even as reliable as a Chevy. No, really. A 3-year-old Audi/VW has the same number of problems as an 8-year-old toyota. Why don’t they spend some of that design and “German engineering” time that they’re so proud of making a car that won’t have electrical problems from the time you drive it off the lot.

C) This isn’t a problem, unless you’re the first owner: the resale on Audis blows. Which is great news if you want to get a 2-year-old A4 for half the cost of new, but a little depressing when you want to trade one in.

D) It’s a rip-off of the Nissan Z. What’s unfortunate about that is that the Z is a muscular and fast-looking, but surprisingly ugly car. Sure the TT is prettier - it’d almost have to be.

Call me crazy, but if I were in the market, I’d find a nice Honda or Toyota that had a design that I liked. (To include Acura or Lexus.) Something reliable, safe and with a good resale value will get you a lot farther than an Audi. You can talk about “understated” design until the cows come home, but Audis are more flash than substance.

Noah Daniels 06 Apr 06

Too bad Audi, like every other car mfg, made the new version *bigger* than the old one. Grrr. The TT was a perfect size for what it was. Of course, given the aluminum space frame, it might not be much heavier. Also a shame that sweet 2.0TFSI can’t be had with quattro; only the heavier V6. The 2.0TFSI can make 260-280hp easily with a chip.

At least Audi still makes a car with decent road feel and balance, unlike Honda (S2000 excepted) and Toyota. My 5-year-old S4 has been very reliable, given the abuse (track days) I subject it to, but the more boring cars are always more reliable. That’s life.

I still wish the new TT weren’t bigger than the old one.

Brandon Eley 06 Apr 06

Mmmm… I want one. I was eyeing a used (slightly) TT a few months ago and my wife had a fit. I guess they’re not practical cars when you have 2 small children :)

Anonymous Coward 06 Apr 06

Alex Hutton 06 Apr 06

Those are nice lines…

I liked them a bunch when they were developed years ago for the 911.

At the end of the day, it’s still a Volkswagon.

AWK 06 Apr 06

I have a 2006 Audi A4 Quattro with 2.0 TFSI and it’s a 4 cyl. rated at 200 hp and, as someone else pointed out, with chipping you can push this to 250 - 260 hp easy.

Audi’s direct inject engines are kickass, 3000 miles so far and I’m getting 27 mpg around town and 32 mpg highway with acceleration like a space shuttle. What’s not to like?

Anonymous Coward 06 Apr 06

Audi does make an incredible engine. The v8 engine in the current S4 (and A8 and A6) is one of the finest engines ever built. And their 1.8 and 2.0 turbos are incredible workhorses too.

Bob Aman 06 Apr 06

While I agree that it does look an aweful lot like the Z, and also a wee bit Porschesque, I’ve never really faulted people much for copying stuff as long as the end result was ultimately an improvement. The only tiny issue I have with the new TT design is the way the rear hatch meets the rest of the car’s body. Not really a fan. Other than that, I think it looks fantastic.

That said, I’ve still got my eyes on a Scion tC. It’s easy on the eyes, way less expensive, and plenty reliable from what I hear.

Christopher Fahey 06 Apr 06

I have to agree with Jeff L: The old TT had a design that really made it stand out from the crowd (just like its cousin, the VW Beetle, which was designed by the same guy, Freeman Thomas). This new one is lovely, but it would not cause me to look twice at it. It’s a far-above-average but otherwise traditionally-designed car.

JF 06 Apr 06

Remember that the TT ushered in a new era of car design. That was a revolutionary, iconic design. It’s a museum quality design. There are few cars on the market today that weren’t influenced by the design of the TT.

The “old” TT could come out today and it would still be brand new. That is so rare.

Designs like that don’t come around often. So expecting a revolution every body change is an expectation that will never be met. If you want to be eternally disappointed this is the route to go.

Daniel, Rogue Connect 06 Apr 06

Bloody nice! I’ve been waiting for the new TT to be unveiled for a long time! It’s nice to see that it hasn’t lost the feel of the original, but has been revamped enough to make the original a classic!

Peter Cooper 06 Apr 06

It’s looking a lot more like a Posche now, but possibly a little cooler even. The old TT felt a bit like a squashed Beetle but this has more edge. I’d still rather have a Mercedes McLaren SLR though ;-)

Don Schenck 06 Apr 06

What do I always say?

Yet Another Ugly Audi.

By far, the most design-impaired automaker on the planet.

JF 06 Apr 06

I KNEW we could draw Schenck out of the shadows with an Audi post.

Bullock 06 Apr 06

NICE!

Luis 06 Apr 06

I figure anyone that can afford it can also afford the repairs when they happen. Oh, and they’ll happen.

Anonymous Coward 06 Apr 06

Whats the fun in spending a pile of cash for a car that will end up in the shop every other month?

ahh, hyperbole in full effect.

my family has 2 bmws (both with over 165,000 miles) and I’ve had an Audi for 6 years. no problems to speak of.

F. Jason 07 Apr 06

I have 2004 model A4, and quite happy with it. However, when i first bought it in 2004, i had a serious of problems, especially on air condition system. Audi replaced air condition system of my car and all problems solved. I had no problems after that.

I would consider Mercedes E series or Audi Q7 as my next car if i can make lots of money in the following few years. I will never ever consider BMW.

I like big cars which have too much horsepower :)

Stefan 07 Apr 06

strange that a few people seem to think Audi’s are unreliable. here in europe they are known for their reliability and they have the cleanest designed cockpits

F. Jason 07 Apr 06

I didn’t say that Audi’s are unreliable. I love Audi’s (even i hate the latest design of A4’s). I love Audi… I own A4… :)

Daniel 07 Apr 06

Stefan: In the (part of) Europe I live in, Audi (together with all members of the V.A.G. family) got a very bad reputation after the sales successes they achieved beginning around the time of the original TT. They had a hard time with low quality combined with bad service at the repair shops since they were not prepared for the increased numbers of cars.

While they has got better, not least in the service area, I think they still are more known for the “impression of quality” they give, much based on the “look and feel” of their nice interiors. In statistics they seem to be quite average.

Jemaleddin 07 Apr 06

Daniel and Stefan: No, statistically, they’re below average in terms of quality. Sadly, so are BMW and Mercedes, and so much so that they have more problems than the big three American brands (and let’s not split hairs about Daimler Chrysler).

Check out the 2006 Cars issue of Consumer Reports. No, they don’t have prose filled with hyperbole about each car, and no, there aren’t a lot of glossy pictures of hot roadsters. Just real stats.

It’s amazing to me that people are willing to put up with so many problems when there are better cars out there. And it’s kind of silly that JF is so obsessed with Audis when they’re the antithesis of the 37Signals “Getting Real” ideals.

Anon 07 Apr 06

Getting Real is for building web applications.

I have been a long-time fan of the TT and am anxious for the day when I will be able to afford one of my own. My favorite part of the car is it’s rounded look. I agree with those who think this new styling is far less unique and too angled. I hope future models don’t exentuate this look.

f5 07 Apr 06

Stefan-

It’s more than just a few people here (whether you mean this forum, or the US) — Audi’s for the most part are very unreliable in the states (and relatively expensive to work on). no joke. I know this topic has been beaten to death on this site previously, I seem to remember someone claiming that the audis sold in the US were fundamentally different from those sold in Europe. I have a hard time believing this, but what do I know.

Don Schenck 07 Apr 06

Read the stats: German cars are consistently near the bottom when it comes to reliability.

Fun to drive? Sure! But you end up driving it to the garage.

I’ll take a used Mercury Marauder and blow the doors of your TT and get it serviced less often at half the price.

My days of expensive Eurotrash cars is over.

Anonymous Coward 07 Apr 06

It’s not only the upfront cost - but the fact that when it goes to the shop for manufacture problems they created(ie: fuel coil burn out) it takes the company 9 months to start covering the rental cost while you wait for one coil to come in. And they won’t replace the others they know will burn out in a week.

If you have an engine mgt issue your paying a tech to sit and TRY to diagnose it with a 5051 or 5052 scan tool they do not know how to use so they eventually throw a part at it, write it up as a warrenty fix, spend 2 minutes on it, charge the full 2 hours of warrenty back to the manufacturer. Wash, rinse , repeat that 20 times a day and you have bad techs making 100,000k a year. Customers who have to bring it back again and eventually buy an acura.

The audi designs are not as good as the last revs but they are not horrible. It’s the “true” cost of ownership that kills you. I’ll take two hondas or acuras over one “german engineering” any day.

Vw on the other hand took the camry and corolla-did a quick mashup and put out the new jetta. If i want asian styling i’ll go and buy it direct.

Anonymous Fool 07 Apr 06

Korean is the way to go!

Hyundia makes a better looking Accord than Toyota!

Don Schenck 07 Apr 06

Laugh it up … but the fact is that Hyundai has the most state-of-the-art auto manufacturing facilities in the world, and continues to make the biggest quality improvements (then again, they had a lot of ground to cover).

Hyundai is the next Honda.

Anonymous Fool 07 Apr 06

Who’s laughing?

That was a serious statement!

Once they can rid themselves of their perceived and/or actual quality problems, they will be a serious contender. Certainly some of the best value for the money out there at the moment. Not sure how the Chinese players will compare….

Many here has said that the new TT is a knock off of Japanese cars. I think that’s a ridicules statement. I think what is wrong with the new TT is that the designer maybe tries to follow the trend and make this Japanese looking headlights. They also look a little like the headlights on a new Mondeo… rather doll and not very intimidating. Well never like the old TT either. A bit of a hairdressers car the TT was.

I think the interior is looking all right. It’s the typical neutral a bit sporty solid German Audi look.

Well enough said. The TT continuous to be the hairdressers Audi. It’s a good thing we still have the A’s the S’s and the RS’s for the real men.

Also:
Jemaleddin said: Quote: “Audis are more flash than substance”
I’d say no. The new Audi RS4 is a hell machine with 450 HP and almost 50-50 weight distribution which makes it handle like a dream. Jeremy Clarkson would almost rather have the new RS4 then the new M5…. Now that’s not bad at all!!

Well - have fun.

JF: Remember that the TT ushered in a new era of car design. That was a revolutionary, iconic design.

You’ve got every right to love Audi and the cars they make, and they do make beautiful cars, but please stop it with the hyperbole, it makes you sound like a fool.

The real iconic design of the last ten years is the Volkswagen New Beetle, which ushered in a new era of retromobiles (Mini, Mustang, PT Cruiser, HHR, Toyota FJ Cruiser, etc.). The TT was a beautiful car, but it had none of the historical importance you want to give it.

Too bad, Audi. Over the years I’ve owned a ‘97 A4, an ‘01 S4, and now drive an ‘04 TT. In the meantime, the very attractive design of the original A4 became ugly (driving me into the original TT design), and now the TT looks like a Pontiac from the front. And it’s bigger, which probably means it won’t get the 30mpg that I routinely get with my 225hp TT (versus the 21 I got with the S4). So it looks like I’ll be moving over to BMW next time around. In the meantime, maybe quality will step up a notch when I switch…one shouldn’t have to replace ball joints at 16,000 miles, now, should they - in a car that’s never seen anything other than a standard highway?

Bob 18 Apr 06

The new generation Audi’s are much better than the previous in terms of reliability. The engines are better and very efficient. Lexus is a great brand built on reliability but it lacks the passion and design culture. Look at TFSI technology combining turbo with fuel stratified injection - with 2 litres it gives 220 hp. and incredible economy and max. torque of 280 nm from 1800 - 4500 rpm. Now thats an achievement - 2 litre engine with 3.0 litre performance. The other thing Audi is good at is its interior design - simple, quality, easy to use, lasting. What Audi is not good at is cleaning out the bugs - small rattling noise here and there. That they must really get done. Otherwise there is noting much wrong with the car.

I’ve owned an audi tt 3.2 dsg coupe for 14 mths and it’s without doubt the most relaiable car I’ve ever owned not 1 problem
The new design was predictable with the bigger grille and sharper body lines but I prefer the rounded lines of the current model it would be perfect with an all aluminium body the weight saving would make it fly ….not literally!

The new TT looks truly awesome. I admit the original was a stroke of design genius and will always be a classic. Having said that, it is now starting to look and feel just a little dated. The designers of the new TT have taken the original classic design and modernised it into a more streamlined, more bullet shaped, more aggressive looking car. It now looks like one of the finest, truly state of the art, desirable cars on the planet. I have seen one of these cars in the flesh in Germany and i can assure you the pictures do not do it justice.

I own an Audi A3 2.0 TDI DSG and have had no problems. Nor did i have any problems with my A2 1.4SE petrol before it. Hopefully when i become one of the first drivers in the world to get delivery of my new 2.0TFSI S Tronic (DSG) TT in September this will continue.

You people who say never buy “eurotrash” are idiots. I’ve own american cars my whole life mainly GM products, recently the quality of their products have gone way down hill. So i sold my tahoe and bought a used tt. First off, It is built to definitely a much higher standard in quality. Than any american car even luxury cars, NO CHEAP american PLASTICS!!, Second of all every one i have talked to that owns an Audi is very enthusiastic and helpful when talking about their audi. Even the dealership service is top notch. I will gladly pay extra for the audi, than american cars made from cheap hand-me down parts from old cars that break constantly. Btw if look up the old tt’s 1.8liter engine, it was voted in top 10 engines of the year for many years in a row, for it reliability and durability. Audi has me sold on there cars. Also this new tt style might not be the best looking, but besides the corvette wat good looking cars are GM coming out with? have u seen the new Tahoes or impala’s, they are a discrace to car design. maybe if they borrowed some german designers, American car companies would’nt be goin bankrupt.
