I just got the first issue of Ferninand in the mail, and I have to say it has been a long, long time since I was this impressed by a magazine.
The entire thing (and their website) is the work of just a few people, led by designer Lester Nelson. All proceeds go toward opening a graphic design tutoring center in the Philippines for artists who can’t afford traditional art education.
We’re lucky to live in a time where anyone can publish a book on their own, anyone can record an album in their garage, anyone can even print their own magazine. But not just anyone can make something this beautiful, this well-designed and considered, for such a great cause as this. Check it out, a great preview is available online and a copy is just $10.
Well done, Les & team!

on 07 Oct 08If you’re looking to be impressed by a magazine, do check out Garden & Gun (http://gardenandgun.com/). Seriously. The layouts, photography, and type all come together in a really beautiful way. I have interest in neither topics put forth by the title, but I love opening this magazine because it is a beautiful specimen of design.

on 07 Oct 08Both links work fine for me, too. Unfortunately they currently don’t offer shipping to Europe. The preview looks quite promising though. Thanks for sharing!

on 07 Oct 08Huh? Ferdinand Center for the Creative? Sounds interesting. Let’s see if I could clean my track record and actually get involve in the Philippine Design community… I guess criticizing the fact that many co-web developers in my beloved country still churn out sites that scream “Fad in 1999!” can’t be considered as actual participation.
On a sidenote, I forgot that I couldn’t join many of the design groups here in the Philippines.. Yep, I’m not elite enough for that.. >.<

on 07 Oct 08There’s still a typo in the link posted.
FerDinand? named after Franz, I presume
JD
on 07 Oct 08GeeIWonder, I am not totally sure about which Ferdinand the magazine is named after. Maybe Ferdinand Magellan? Probably not Ferdinand Marcos! At least I hope not.
Keeto
on 07 Oct 08@JD: Yes, Ferdinand Magellan—says so on the site. But I couldn’t see why Ferdinand Marcos wouldn’t be appropriate. He was, after all, a pretty good and capable president. Imelda, on the other hand.. “Ang order ni Misis!” _
