The Deck has put together a readership survey for sites that are part of the network. We’d love if you take a moment to fill it out.
If you do persevere and make it through to the end we’ll ask you for an email address. We’re only doing that so we can randomly choose twenty people and send them some Field Notes Brand Memo Books and a free year of 37signals’ Highrise in appreciation.
Thanks for participating.

on 22 May 09Why does the survey ask me how often I have sex?
Coudal
on 22 May 09Because we’re nosy and are having a bit of fun with the conventions of marketing surveys. But feel free to skip any questions you don’t want to answer.
Tim
on 22 May 09@Coudal
That’s cool and I get that.
Just keep in mind though that every extra fun question, or fun answer choice exponentially reduces my chance of either: 1) completing the survey, or 2) even starting the survey to begin with.
If it looks too long, or if while taking the survey feel like I’m spending too much time on it, I’m simply not going to submit the survey.
Coudal
on 22 May 09Hmm, not sure that is true for everyone Tim. In fact almost every person who starts the survey seems to get to the end. We think that the biggest problem w/ most marketing surveys is that they are dreary, awful and boring. As with most things, we think a conversational approach is a much better way to go.
Coudal
on 22 May 09I just checked the results. Since we launched the survey late yesterday the completion rate is amazing. 651 people have started the survey and 651 have got to the end and clicked “done.” Now that doesn’t mean that every person answered every question but it does mean they were involved enough to get thru the whole thing.
PS: Don’t be the one to spoil our perfect record please!

Hmm … Maybe then just don’t start the survey with the funny distracting question.
When I started the survey and saw it asking about music, #2 about movies, #3 gender, #4 about my sex life …
It wasn’t until question #8 that it finally asked a directly related question about to The Deck.
I got to about question #3 or #4 and then thought, “Wait – is this the correct survey?”
Maybe move those funny bits further down in the survey. Just a suggestion

on 22 May 09Jim, Congrats on the success of The Deck. A great idea and well implemented. Is it still true that you won’t take an ad unless you have paid for and/or used the product or service? As the breadth and variety of advertisers has grown over time, are the ads all still personally vetted by one or more Deck Members?
Coudal
on 22 May 09We actually thought about the order of the questions a lot and in the face of the evidence I think we’ll stick with our decisions. Hope you got to the end Tim. Did you write the haiku? Cheers!
Coudal
on 22 May 09OK, who’s the wise guy who just bailed in the middle of the survey? Damn, I knew I shouldn’t have commented…
Bryan
on 22 May 09Finished the survey… sorry, the haiku thing is way too much thinking/work… so i just gave a straight answer about a chick at a stop light. Other than that, I thought the survey was fun.
Oh… and I took an educated guess and the inclined plane thing. I am curious about what you are looking for with that question… perhaps a tweet about that when its over.
Coudal
on 22 May 09Happy,
In general the answer is yes, we try to at least kick the tires of all the advertisers’ products and services but we don’t, for example, ask to see a movie before it’s premiere to evaluate if we’ll accept an ad promoting it. We’re testing to see if things are truly relevant to our audience and if we respect the advertiser and product. 99% of time time it’s a pretty obvious call. We say no a lot more than we say yes.

on 22 May 09Bryan,
Question 21 is generating quite a bit of controversy and you can be sure we’ll detail it all after the results are all collected.
Jen
on 22 May 09What fun filling out this survey – a refreshing change from the usual. I’m sure you’ll enjoy the haikus and get valuable information about The Deck.
I enjoyed the challenge of #21. However, my trig skills failed me so I just drew it in CAD and measured the angle. Looking forward to the solution. Will you post some of the haikus too?
jim Coudal
on 22 May 09Jen,
Yep, we will publish tons of stuff at the end and selected stuff here and there via Twitter.

on 22 May 09telephone pole stands along an inclined highway and casts a 52 foot shadow down the incline directly along the highway when the angle of elevation of the sun is 55 degrees. If the height of the pole is 65 feet, w’hat is the angle of inclination of the highway?[/blockquote] 9.20 degrees.

on 23 May 09My question back to you is who is the trig nut? The rest of us are into crosswords and the eight queens problem.

on 23 May 09Best. Survey. Ever.
Seriously, it is!!

on 23 May 09great survey beats the other formal tosh you get

on 24 May 09I wish there was a ‘second-level-deck’ or ‘mini-deck’, where bloggers like me (even though my blog is shiny and new) could place relevant up-market advertising and do away with text link advertising. That’s why my blog has no ads. I would like quality relevant ads tho, and only a handful.

on 25 May 09Come on Rob, leave let everyone have a chance at working it out!
Coudal: The link to ffffffffffffffffffffound from the deck site at the end of the survey takes you to a domain registration page.
Alisey
on 25 May 09@Coudal Sorry if I spoiled your perfect record. This is the best survey ever, and I started it once again to save a local copy.
Paul
on 25 May 09Didn’t fill in because of the “sex question”. Too nosy.
Rick
on 25 May 09If I fill out the survey, will someone actually answer my emails about advertising in “The Deck”?
Because apparently, customer service is not The Deck’s strong point.
Coudal
on 25 May 09Hi Rick, the last mail I see from you regarding the Deck was from October 1 of 2007 and it was answered right away. Maybe more recent ones were snagged by an overzealous spam filter or something? Please resend to deck at coudal dot com and I will look out for it. Cheers,
jim
ps: Be patient Michael.

on 26 May 09Interesting survey. It was nice that it had a little bit of everything, I especially liked the haiku part, I had to dig deep.
Kudos
Michael Søndergaard
on 26 May 09@Coudal just finished. Most amazing survey I’ve ever answered, the conversational style is just awesome for keeping peoples attention—especially when you’ve just pulled an all nighter like me.
