We are very proud to announce that Joshua Peek will be joining the ranks of 37signals as a full-time employee in January. Like most of the other programmers we’ve hired at 37signals, I first got to know Josh through Ruby on Rails where he has been doing a fantastic job for years now.
We’ve been trying to hire him just about ever since, but despite our best efforts, we haven’t been able to get him to drop out of college. So that’s also why we’ll be waiting impatiently until January for Josh to wrap up the final batch of tough classes.
Josh has actually been working on the 37signals suite of products for quite some time as a contractor, though. So when I announced that we’ve come to an agreement on permanent employment this morning, there was much rejoicing from the rest of the team:
Joshua Peek will be the 15th signal.

on 05 Aug 09Congratulations 37signals and Josh!
This brings to mind, that you may soon be approaching a difficult point in time: the moment where number of employees starts to impose on the solid, proven the-way-we-do-things-around-here. The number seems to be somewhere around 20 employees, which is when most startups discover that the guy(s) that runs things can’t manage the company and work on their own projects at the same time. Big founders dilemna.
At this juncture, most companies start to install systems of all kinds, to manage things that never seemed to need managing before. I know a software company that was started in 1996 and has since then expanded to 30 employees 3 times, each time running into trouble only to be downsized to 18 employees and for the whole rollercoaster to start again.
Well, 37signals is certainly not most companies, and I’m curious to see how you will handle your growth in the future. Hopefully you will be able to address this dilemna in your new book, which I understand will be out in March 2010 and called “Rework”?
All the best, keep up the good work guys!

on 06 Aug 09Congrats to you guys and Josh, but that fact that you tried to get him to drop out of school is asinine. I’m glad he decided to finish.

on 06 Aug 09@Joe.. I have a hunch, however small and uninformed, that that sentence might be taken as irony.

on 06 Aug 09@YAAC Pardon me if it is; Jason said something similar on Twitter which may have caused my confusion.

on 07 Aug 09Josh is scary sharp. Huge congrats to 37signals.

on 07 Aug 09@Joe, I don’t follow them on Twitter – but if isn’t said jokingly I guess I am the ass.. and 37s (I concur with your thoughts regarding trying to make someone drop out of school).
