If you have to explain your clever corporate naming right in the link, maybe it’s just not worth it? [From Jamba Juice]
You’re reading Signal v. Noise, a publication about the web by Basecamp since 1999. Happy !

on 29 May 10uh, if you have to explain what your clever software does right on the page, maybe it’s just not worth it?

on 29 May 10Easy there, Jamba is just trying to be funny

on 29 May 10My guess is this was voten on and revised at least twice before going live.
I agree with David. If your navigation/menu items have to be explained you missed the boat.
They should read “made to stick.”

on 29 May 10Uhhh?
1) I don’t think most people would have trouble figuring it out even without the explication 2) “Basecamp® Manage Your Projects”, “Highrise® Track Your Contacts”, “Backpack® Organize Your Business”, “Campfire® Chat with Your Group” – from your landing page. If you have to explain your clever corporate naming right in the link….

on 29 May 10Doesn’t feel like the 37signals team likes to point out how everybody are wrong and they are the only ones doing things the smart way?
When somebody usually criticizes everyone else, it’s because he’s not happy with himself and tries to put people down to feel better.
It wouldn’t surprise me if they posted “We are the only intelligent web app business and everyone else it’s just plain dumb!”
Ok I probably exaggerated but when you point out something that can clearly be seen as a bad design decision, fine. But it seems that you are just trying to pick on anything you see, like the “This is no content” post a few days ago. Now this.
Please, post quality observations.
I still like 37signals, so I will still keep on digging through their blog to find hidden gems.

on 29 May 10We point out the good and the bad of things we see. See Sam’s highlight of WaterFields invoice and Jason’s comment on NYT’s UI for just a few recent examples of us highlighting other sites doing stuff well.

on 31 May 10@Michael @Robert – I see what you’re trying to do and throw the hypocrisy card but “Basecamp® Manage Your Projects” is not explaining the naming—it’s explaining the product. If it read, “Basecamp® (a basecamp is a central place where your team organizes and plans their work) Manage Your Projects, then that would be explaining the naming.

on 01 Jun 10@Sean: My thoughts exactly.
