All the talk of Lebron vs. Jordan has reminded me of one of my favorite Jordan clips ever: His last introduction in Chicago (as a Washington Wizard). What a moment.
You’re reading Signal v. Noise, a publication about the web by Basecamp since 1999. Happy !

on 10 Jun 11So cool. This was a great moment. I maintain that he was underrated as a Wizard.

on 10 Jun 11The nicest thing about this clip is that the announcers weren’t talking over top of it. Just letting it go.

on 10 Jun 11His greatness as a Bull makes us forget his strange cup of coffee in baseball’s minor leagues and his unspectacular years as a Wizard.
Lebron is no Jordan.

on 10 Jun 11I lived in Cleveland up until late 2009, and believe me, as a city that couldn’t score a championship in any sport, we all had high hopes for Lebron. Even as a high school kid we were impressed, and early on he seemed mature beyond his age.
But he’s no Michael Jordan. His attention whoring stunt last year was an embarrassment to pro sports (and a kick in the nuts to Cleveland). Even now, he continues to be a cry baby when things aren’t going his way, and he gives up. Ask him for a dollar, and he’ll give you three quarters. If anything, he’s a Scottie Pippen, not a Jordan, but Scottie was not a douche.

on 10 Jun 11Growing up in Chicago and traveling I would go to Bulls games all over the country to see Jordan play.
Invariably I always sat next to someone seeing Jordan play for the first time.
Many times these people would travel hours to see him. What was “taken for granted” as Chicagoan was a real treat for all these people.
It was a pilgrimage to say “I saw Michael Jordan play vs…”

on 10 Jun 11If you think about it this sport always has a singular dominate player during a particular era with one villain player to rival him. We’ve gone from Bird to Jordan to Bryant to … maybe it hasn’t moved on yet, but there always seems to be a big player to love or hate. Lebron has taken on this persona & really hasn’t gotten the accolades to support it yet. It’s interesting to see.

on 13 Jun 11I forget when this Chicago farewell occurred during the great Jordan’s last season. Was this before MJ informed Wizards coach Doug Collins that he would no longer be coming off the bench or after he destroyed Kwame Brown’s psyche by calling him a “flaming faggot?”
LeBron may be an egomaniac (hardly a unique attribute among NBA elites) but there are no reports of him ordering his coaches around or browbeating his teammates.

on 13 Jun 11Greatest athlete (taking into account attitude etc) all time – MJ?
No way.
Donald Bradman (hands down). Federer (?). Maybe Kelly Slater.
Donald Bradman, some sort of incredible (I’m biased though).
For those of you outside the Commonwealth, do some Googling.
